The New York Yankees have made two notable moves at the catcher position amid their series with the Boston Red Sox.

After last night's loss, backup J.C.

Escarra was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the AL East club announced.

Taking Escarra's place on the roster is Ali Sanchez, who was reinstated from the paternity list.

Sanchez, a right-handed hitter, will likely be in the lineup the next two days as the Yankees face left-handers Payton Tolle and Jake Bennett.

Since his promotion from Triple-A, Sanchez has provided the Yankees with solid offense as a backup catcher, hitting .316 with two doubles and three RBIs in 21 trips to the plate.

Escarra and starter Austin Wells have both had dreadful seasons at the plate.

Wells, who hit 21 home runs with a .712 OPS in 2025, is hitting .165/.269/.253 with four homers and a .522 OPS.

The last time Wells had two or more hits in a game was May 26 against the Kansas City Royals.

In 92 plate appearances, Escarra owns a .510 OPS with no homers and seven RBIs.

The Yankees will almost certainly be active on the trade market to find a right-handed-hitting catcher to platoon with Wells.
