Tigers' Casey Mize can join trade rumors with Tarik Skubal
Every Detroit Tigers trade rumor is going to start with Tarik Skubal.
The rumors shouldn't end there, though.
Skubal isn't even the only talented Tigers starting pitcher whose contract is up at the end of this season.
It's time to include Casey Mize in the discussion.
Sure, the Tigers would prefer not to deal any of these guys and instead get back into contention.
And yes, Mize is going to have to prove he's healthy after getting a bit injured.
But if the Tigers do sell, Mize is a prime candidate to be moved, too, particularly to a team that isn't trying to sell the whole farm to get Skubal.
"Yeah, we get it, Tarik Skubal will be the biggest name in baseball around the Deadline," MLB.com's Jason Beck wrote on Sunday.
"But if the Tigers indeed end up becoming sellers, Mize is a sneaky name to watch." Mize is the one who entered professional baseball with the more notable pedigree -- he was once the No.
1 overall pick.
"The former No.
1 overall pick is off to the best start of his career, even better than his All-Star campaign last year," Beck writes.
"He entered Sunday ranked seventh in bWAR among AL pitchers at 2.2 despite missing time on the injured list with an adductor strain.
His splitter is back to being a nasty out pitch, allowing him to raise his strikeout rate to a career-best 26.5%.
And like Skubal, Mize is a free agent at seasons end." Being in a contract year makes Mize just as likely to get traded as Skubal.
And even though he won't generate the same level of fanfare, he could be a huge pickup for another team, and he's still good enough to bring good pieces back to Detroit in return.
