Undrafted WR making a late push to earn spot on Commanders' roster

Draft analysts believed the Washington Commanders got a steal when they signed Ja'Corey Brooks as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL draft.

A former five-star recruit, Brooks began his career at Alabama before playing his final season at Louisville, where he finished with 61 receptions for 1,013 yards and nine touchdowns.

Brooks had an excellent start to training camp, making several splash plays during the first week.

Things settled down over the next couple of weeks, as Washington's cornerbacks clamped down on the receivers and Brooks experienced the typical growing pains of a rookie wideout.

Before training camp and even early in camp when Brooks was standing out, almost no one saw him making the 53-man roster.

Nearly everyone believed he'd be a perfect candidate for the practice squad as the Commanders could continue developing him.

However, the uncertainty with Washington's wide receivers and a recent surge from Brooks has given him new life.

In last week's preseason loss to the New England Patriots, Brooks led the Commanders with five receptions for 59 yards.

Both were team highs.

Washington has two preseason games remaining, on Monday against Cincinnati and next week against Baltimore.

That's two more opportunities for Brooks to show he deserves that final wide receiver spot.

One of the players competing for that spot, Michael Strachan, was released this week.

Still, Brooks is competing with K.J.

Osborn, Jacoby Jones, Michael Gallup, Tay Martin, Chris Moore and Jacoby Jones for one, maybe two spots.

He needs to stand out in practice each day, shine in the preseason games and prove he can help on special teams.

Brooks had a good day of practice on Friday.

Zach Selby of commanders.com on Brooks:Ja'Corey Brooks, one of the wide receivers looking to earn the last spot in the position group, had a pair of impressive catches in team drills.

The first was a completion deep downfield on a dart from Jayden Daniels, while the second was a contested grab near the end of practice.

The Commanders later posted the clip on that dart from Jayden Daniels to Brooks.
