New Orleans quarterback Spencer Rattler should be the QB Saints fans are ‘excited’ about | Sporting News

As expected, Spencer Rattler has taken the early lead in New Orleans Saints OTAs.
He has been on the team for a season, and that plays a role in the competition.
Tyler Shough seemed like he should be the quarterback the Saints go with , but John Hendrix of NewOrleans.football made a great point on the Locked on Saints podcast, perhaps changing perspectives on who should be the starter for the Saints in 2025.
I would say were not going to get hyped up over eight throws, I mean like, again nobody's deciding anybody as a starter over eight OTAs throws, theres no pressure packages, there's no contact really.
But I did think Spencer Rattler handled himself extremely well, I thought Tyler Shough handled himself extremely well.
So I feel like with Spencer Rattler it was a good confidence builder, Hendrix said.
Hes been there as part of the off season program kind since day one, and he has been working in the off season, tirelessly right and there was a lot of confidence come through for him I thought he looked good.
The thing is you look at the route tree or wherever his competition percentage and where his completion distribution was Rattler used a lot of the different sides of the field, I think Shough besides that one big hook up Shaheed was mostly more in that short to intermediate range, but look, I think Rattlers placement on some of those throws was just perfect, like he had one he threaded right in the middle where Danny Stutsman was and Jordan Howden, I mean that was a perfect placement for Rattler, thats the type of stuff people should be excited about.
Rattler competed last year in 2024 with seven starts.
Those starts tallied 1,317 yards with four touchdowns to five interceptions, with a completion rating of 57%.
All against pretty good defenses from Tampa Bay twice, to the Denver Broncos, and the up-and-coming Washington Commanders.
The only game Rattler could be dinged for is the Las Vegas Raiders loss.
That was a bad game all the way around for him, but for a team last season who knew their season was over and was just seeing what they had, Rattler wasnt expected to save the team but his passer rating did look better against the good defenses than it was versus the bad one.
Even Ross Jackson of the Locked on Saints podcast has glowing words to say about Rattler.
What helped Spencer Rattler really stand out though was his quick decision making, got the ball out quickly, we saw him move the field from one side to the other, we seen him make all these full field progressions and how quickly he was able to get through that and move on and get the ball out.
Being part of the equation for him was being sacked 22 times in his games last season, and a big part of that was holding on to the football, young quarterback things, things you would expect, these aren't surprising growth areas for spencer rattler, but you can see the experience really kinda stand out and the one of the things that I think every player and any person can in any profession benefits from is knowing exactly where it is that they want to improve, what they want to get better at.
I think you can see that growth from that determination in Spencer Rattler over the course of this off season, Jackson said.
The experience from Rattler definitely looked good on display at the start of OTAs and may have switched my thought from Shough being the starter week one to Rattler.
But its early, and there is a lot of off-season left to go until the start of the season..
