The Eastern and Western Conference Finals are set to start this Tuesday.

The four competing teams are the New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Knicks are the only franchise that has been in the NBA Finals before.

They havent been there, however, since the 1972-73 season.

In the 50+ years since that championship, there have been 19 other NBA champs.

The NBA struggled with parity amongst its teams for many seasons.

From 1980-2020, whoever was going to be in the NBA Finals was somewhat predictable.

During those 40 years, at least one NBA Finals team was led by one of the following players: Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Isaiah Thomas, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, Shaquille ONeal, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, or Stephen Curry.

That means 40 years of NBA basketball were dictated by 10 people.

Because of this, the NBA has long been pushing towards a league with parity, something that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has long stated as a goal.

The NBA has now gotten its wish.

The Knicks have the opportunity to make NBA history as part of this new parity.

For the last six seasons, there has been a different NBA champion each year.

If the Knicks (or any of the other four teams, for that matter) win the championship, they will make it seven years with a new NBA champion each year.

That is something that has never been done in the leagues history.
