Israeli soccer fans were attacked in Amsterdam.

The violence was condemned as antisemitic AMSTERDAM (AP) Dutch authorities say Israeli fans were assaulted after a soccer game in Amsterdam by hordes of young people apparently riled up by calls on social media to target Jewish people.

Five people were treated at hospitals and dozens were arrested after the attacks, which were condemned as antisemitic by authorities in Amsterdam, Israel and across Europe.

Reports of antisemitic speech, vandalism and violence have been on the rise in Europe since the start of the war in Gaza, and tensions mounted in Amsterdam ahead of Thursday nights match between the Dutch team Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators were banned by local authorities from gathering outside the stadium, and video showed Israeli fans chanting anti-Arab slogans on their way to the game.

Israeli teams can't play international games at home.

Now, are Maccabi's away games at risk? The violence against fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv in Amsterdam has some Israelis worried if its safe for their sports teams and fans to travel to games abroad.

Many Palestinians want them entirely banned over Israels conduct of the war with Hamas.

Israels soccer teams play domestic games there despite the Israel-Hamas war.

But UEFA, the European soccer body, has ruled that the war with Hamas means Israel cannot host international games.

Supporters of the Palestinian campaign to ban Israel from international competition have criticized the world soccer body, FIFA, for not matching its 2022 decision to suspend Russian national teams from competitions days after the invasion of Ukraine.
