FARGO Jack Liwiesnki didnt tell anyone that he was going to get his first career start last Saturday at Murray State.

He sent a text message to his parents back in Minnesota shortly before kickoff.

ADVERTISEMENT I didnt tell them until the last minute honestly.

I wanted to surprise them.

I texted them right before the game, make sure youre tuning in to the game.

Liwienski said.

Liwiesnki made the start at left guard for the injured Griffin Empey, playing alongside All-American candidate Grey Zabel.

It was the first time Liwienski started a football game since he left Minnetonka High School in the fall of 2022.

Its been two years since I started a game in high school.

It was definitely fun to get out there.

As much as I love practice and lifts, its fun to get out there and go play.

Liwiesnki arrived in Fargo as one of the most highly touted offensive line recruits in recent North Dakota State history.

Liwienski was a three-time all-conference selection out of Minnetonka High School.

He was ranked as the 20th overall prospect in the state of Minnesota for the Class of 2023.

He had offers from 13 schools in high school, including two FBS schools.

All four Dakota schools offered Liwienski, along with NDSU's opponent this week, Northern Iowa.

Those are impressive credentials, but when your dad was an NFL lineman for ten years, compliments dont come easily all the time.

ADVERTISEMENT Jacks dad Chris played for eight years with the Minnesota Vikings, starting 94 career games.

Its a resource that Jack has used throughout his football career.

So when Jack made his first career start, Dad was eager to chat afterwards.

Him and my grandpa, they didnt tell me what I graded out at.

My dad texted me and said I look good.

We had a phone call and talked about it.

He was definitely a little critical about it, but he let our coaches coach.

Liwienski has frequent conversations with his dad about offensive line play.

Its a link he doesnt take for granted.

He knows a lot about ball.

Its good, because if I have a hard day at practice, he just gets it.

He played for a little while so he gets the daily grind, its awesome to have a resource like that.

Tim Polasek is excited about his young Bison offensive linemen, where Liwienski, Empey and fellow redshirt freshman Beau Johnson have all seen playing time this season.

The more game reps he gets against good people, hes a good player and going to be a good player.

said Polasek.

Liwienski is set to start again Saturday against Northern Iowa as Empey recovers from a knee injury.

He figures the nerves will be less than last week and is eager for another chance to be on the field.

ADVERTISEMENT Im definitely going to be pushing to get as much playing time as I can.

To get better week by week, super excited to get back out there again whenever that opportunity arises..
