Power Four schools, including Nebraska, send helmet technology in for security update

The use of new technology is not without stumbling blocks.

This week, the nations top college football conferences ran into just that over the use of in-helmet communication devices.

An offseason rule change which enabled coaches to speak with quarterbacks until the ball is snapped or 15 seconds remain on the play clock, had seemingly gone smoothly for much of the college football season.

That changed on Wednesday when The Big 12 expressed concern that such communications had been broadcast on unencrypted frequencies, news first reported by the Athletic.

It was the first that Id heard of it yesterday, I got a call from a coach saying, Hey, theres some sort of issue, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said.

Hopefully everythings secure.

The Big 12 instructed all its member schools to send back their headsets and communication devices to GSC, the company that manufactured them, for a software update.

GSC, which is headquartered in Wahoo, also supplied the ACC, Big Ten and SEC with the same technology, meaning Nebraska also needed the fix.
