Hell offer up insights every morning on Brad Underwoods team and college basketball at large: Will Illinois keep its streak of Canadians going in 2025-26? Getting Will Riley back for a second season would be the best case scenario, of course.
But if the Illini freshman winds up a first-round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft (as some are currently projecting), Illinois will need to look elsewhere to keep up its Canadian representation.
Like with Class of 2025 forward Spencer Ahrens, who told On3's Joe Tipton, he's down to six schools in his recruitment in Illinois (where he took an official visit in August), Gonzaga, Washington, Stanford, Boise State and San Francisco.
Ahrens, a 6-foot-9, 210-pound forward, is ranked as a near consensus four-star recruit in the Class of 2025.
He has that status from On3, ESPN and Rivals, while 247Sports considers the Mississauga, Ontario, native a three-star prospect.
Ahrens teamed up with Riley this past spring for UPlay on the Nike EYBL circuit and put up 11.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game during the regular season.
He shot 52 percent overall, 44 percent from three-point range and 71 percent at the free throw line.
With Riley in Champaign this summer after reclassifying and signing with Illinois, Ahrens averaged 10.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game at Peach Jam.
Ahrens was also a part of Team Canada's bronze medal-winning team at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup in Argentina in June.
He averaged 10.7 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 36 percent from three-point range.
Illinois has two commitments in the Class of 2025 in four-star guards Brandon Lee and Keaton Wagler.
That duo gives Illinois the No.
10 class in the Big Ten, per 247Sports, and the No.
62 class nationally..
