Happy Halloween! Dont scare any Yankees fans today.

Theyve been through enough.

Before we get to the accolades and the history, I want to focus on one moment from last nights World Series clincher .

It is a play practiced at all levels of baseball, and its now the one that will haunt Yankees fans forever: Mookie Betts gets the Dodgers on the board @MLB pic.twitter.com/vefZBcTjMh The Athletic (@TheAthletic) October 31, 2024 A simple error Gerrit Cole and Anthony Rizzo being on different pages about who was covering first base is the difference between the Dodgers winning a ring last night and the series going back to Los Angeles for Game 6: I aged about 10 years watching this one, and I had no rooting interest.

Shout-out to gray hairs on both coasts.

Two more thoughts about this Dodgers title: For the Yankees, those errors will overshadow Aaron Judge s bounce-back game at the plate (too late) and Giancarlo Stanton s continued playoff heroics.

All for naught.

Now the front office will fret over Juan Soto s free agency.

For the Dodgers, champs of two of the last five World Series? This is a golden era, full stop .

Make sure to read The Windup , which has been fantastic during this playoff run, later this morning for more.

Girmas big night Naomi Girma entered last night with 39 caps for the USWNT, and the 24-year-old has become one of the worlds best defenders, but she was missing one thing: a goal.

Girma made up for it with two goals in last nights 3-0 friendly win over Argentina, a vibey night all around for a USWNT program humming under new coach Emma Hayes.

Advertisement Lions WR under investigation Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams is the subject of a police inquiry, officials confirmed yesterday, relating to a traffic stop in which he was detained.

During the stop, according to body cam footage, officers told Williams he would be arrested for illegally carrying a concealed weapon before releasing him.

Detroit police told The Athletic new information has come to light, which triggered the investigation.

Our full report is here .

Bryce Young to start again A day after we mentioned Bryce Youngs backslide, the second-year Panthers quarterback is once again Carolinas starter, the team announced , even though Andy Dalton is healthy.

Panthers coach Dave Canales noted Youngs role as starter is not a guarantee going forward.

Young showed some signs of life last weekend, starting in place of the injured Dalton, throwing for 224 yards and two touchdowns in a loss.

More news Almost two days later, I remain dumbfounded by the Yankees fan who tried to peel Mookie Betts glove off his hand Tuesday.

The two guys involved were banned for Game 5 , by the way.

But it triggered a larger conversation: Where does this rank on the all-time baseball-fan gaffe list? Zach Powell compiled some other notable ones : Where does Tuesdays brouhaha rank? I say No.

2, only below Bartman.

Most of those older ones outside of the Sheffield situation are understandable.

Fans trying to catch a ball.

In Maiers case, he did catch it, and the Yankees went on to win the World Series.

No regrets.

But Maier himself could not believe Tuesdays affair .

It got the Pulse brain trust thinking: Whats the proper long-term punishment for the culprits? Banned for life? A year? So its up to you, in our next Pulse Poll.
