(Douglas Zimmerman/Special to the Marin Independent Journal) The cross country season officially got underway last Wednesday with the annual Stinson Beach Relays.
A Branson runner claimed first place on the girls side while runners from Archie Williams and Tam tied for top honors in the boys race.
Elsewhere, a trio of teams won preseason tournaments with Marin Catholic and San Marin picking up victories in girls volleyball while Redwood did the same in boys water polo.
The football action was highlighted by San Marins victory against Foothill on Friday night, plus Bransons statement win over Priory in eight-man on Saturday.
Audrey Spaly, Branson girls cross country Spaly kicked off her cross country career with the Bulls by turning in the best individual girls time at the Stinson Beach Relays, crossing the finish line in 9:32.
Spaly, a lacrosse standout who has committed to play for Columbia, ran the fourth leg for Branson.
Spalys time was a few seconds faster than Tams Emma Gardner (9:37) and Redwoods Sydney Middleton (9:40).
Ian Sharp and Lucas Ruark, Archie Williams and Tam boys cross country There was nothing to separate Sharp and Ruark at the Stinson Beach Relays last Wednesday as both runners checked in with times of 8 minutes, 23 seconds to finish in a first-place tie at the season-opening event.
Archie Williams ended up taking first place as a team in front of second-place Tam.
Christina Delaney and Rania Brody, Marin Catholic girls volleyball Marin Catholic won six games over the course of two days, including posting a 5-0 record on Saturday to win the East County Invitational at Deer Valley High.
Delaney, a freshman, paced the team with 43 kills while Brody, the setter, had 107 assists and 29 digs.
Both players also posted strong stat lines in a Friday win against Monte Vista.
Delaney had 16 kills against the Mustangs while Brody dished out 28 assists.
Ossie Joplin, Redwood boys water polo The Giants have been competing at the Roche Tournament for many years, finally winning it for the first time on Saturday following an overtime victory against the hosts, Menlo School.
Joplin was voted as the MVP of the tournament by the players.
Redwood also got strong performances from Swayer Goldberg and goalie Owen Malone.
Redwood went 4-0 at the tournament, defeating Clovis North, Davis, La Jolla, and Menlo.
Brianna Nottingham and Sylvia Tuerke, San Marin girls volleyball Nottingham took home MVP honors while Tuerke was named to the all-tournament team as San Marin went 6-0 to win the San Lorenzo Invitational on Saturday.
Nottingham posted 35 kills, 18 digs, and served eight aces to lead the way for the Mustangs (12-1).
Tuerke chipped in with 23 kills, 14 digs, and six aces.
Wesley Timmel, San Marin football Timmel was held relatively in check as a receiver by Foothill of Palo Cedro on Friday but he still provided the single biggest play of the game.
Timmel took the opening kickoff of the third quarter 95 yards for a touchdown to put San Marin up by 17 en route to an eventual 20-0 win.
Timmel had five catches for 52 yards as a receiver, including a 26-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Rolovich in the second quarter.
Thomas Lardner and Mo Jacoby, Branson football The Bulls kicked off their season with a statement 40-12 win against a Priory team that defeated them 42-28 last season.
Lardner, the quarterback, accounted for four total touchdowns two on the ground and two through the air.
Jacoby caught both of those touchdowns, finishing with seven grabs for 106 yards.
Lardner passed for 193 yards and ran for 32 more yards..
