Unlike Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, team owner Jerry Jones did not push back against former quarterback Troy Aikman's criticism of Cowboys receivers.

Aikman said last week that Dallas' wideouts "run terrible routes," and that three-time Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb "has got to improve in his route running." "Troy knows football, my goodness," Jones said Tuesday on Audacy's 105.3 The Fan .

"He lives it.

When he was here, he was one of the most astute and hardworking people I've ever seen at evaluating tape, or looking at how a team is playing.

Troy is credible, and should be.

And not only that, you can imagine he's not just interested in taking a whack at the Cowboys...

he's very professional, I think he's very fair.

"And certainly, you can look at what we've been doing.

You can look at such things as the separation compared to other teams...

fundamentally, I was talking with Mike, and our players need to work on when they've got tight coverage, they need to work on pushing on through physical contact." Aikman, who played 12 seasons under center for the Cowboys from 1989 to 2000, addressed his former team's passing game in a Thursday appearance on Dallas' 96.7 The Ticket (h/t The Athletic's Jon Machota ): McCarthy pushed back against the comment on Monday when he told reporters he didn't agree with Aikman's choice of words.

"They don't carry any weight with me, because I watch all the tape, I get to go to the meetings, I'm at practice, I'm part of the games.

So I have a clear understanding of what and where," McCarthy said on Monday.

"Troy's statement in particular, I don't agree with the word selection.

There is definitely need for improvement in every position, not just one position that he commented on." The public split between McCarthy and Jones on the subject comes after the Cowboys struggled on both sides of the ball during a 47-9 blowout loss to the Detroit Lions at AT&T Stadium.

Lamb recorded team-high 89 receiving yards in the loss.

But he was only able to connect with Prescott on seven of his 14 targets, one of which was intercepted in the red zone.

The Cowboys are 3-3 to the start the season and have yet to win a game at home.

After a Week 7 bye, McCarthy and Jones have been left with plenty of questions to answer on both offense and defense before hitting the road for Sunday's Week 8 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers..
