Berry Tramel's national rankings: Oregon moves to No. 1

Oregon beat Ohio State 32-31 in a wild game Saturday night at Autzen Stadium.

Its a nice addition to Alabamas 41-34 classic over Georgia, and well see if Georgia-Texas, coming Saturday in Austin, can join the club, too.

And such games show that the expanded College Football Playoff field, from four to 12, cripples not at all the importance of the regular season.

In previous years, Georgia and Ohio State would be on the brink of playoff elimination.

You can argue that would enhance the value of Georgia-Texas or Ohio State-Michigan or whatever game comes down the pike.

But why would we want a Georgia eliminated in October? Why are we itching to get the playoff contenders down to single digits? When 20-30 teams are in playoff contention, there are that many more games of relevance.

And right now, as we hit the halfway mark of October, Id guess 32 teams remain in the running for a playoff berth, not counting about 15 other teams that at least have a longshot of winning their conference and receiving a bid.

Lets get to the national rankings, and remember, this is not a forecast.

This is an analysis of whats happened so far.

Who did you play, where did you play and how did you do? 1.

Oregon (6-0): The Ducks had some good wins.

Boise State, at arch-rival Oregon State, Michigan State.

Now Oregon has a great win.

2.

Brigham Young (6-0): BYU has a top-seven type win (Kansas State) and another really good victory (at Southern Methodist).

3.

Texas (6-0): The Longhorns get their shot at a great win, in Georgia.

4.

Penn State (6-0): The Nittany Lions are collecting quality victories.

At West Virginia, Illinois, at Southern Cal.

5.

Georgia (5-1): Im not ruling out making the Bulldogs No.

1 if they beat Texas.

6.

Alabama (5-1): The Crimson Tide has been sluggish since beating Georgia.

7.

Ohio State (5-1): Will the Buckeyes easy non-conference schedule come back to bite them? Ohio State played Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall.

8.

Louisiana State (5-1): Credit the Tigers.

Theyve recovered nicely from that opening defeat to Southern Cal.

9.

Iowa State (6-0, 2-0): The Cyclones won at Iowa but otherwise havent beaten a Division I-A opponent with a winning record.

10.

Pittsburgh (6-0): The Panthers have some solid victories (at Cincinnati, West Virginia, California), but SMU and Clemson await.

11.

Notre Dame (5-1): The loss to Northern Illinois remains inexplicable.

12.

Texas A&M (5-1): The Aggies fortunes look stronger every week.
