Sports Digest: Mikaeala Shiffrin takes break from downhill racing

SKIING Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States wont compete in downhill races in the upcoming World Cup season in which she aims for a 100th career win.

In the aftermath of a downhill crash in January that kept her off the slopes for six weeks and cost her a record-equaling sixth overall title Shiffrin has decided to drop the sports fastest and most dangerous discipline from her schedule.

No downhill, not this season.

I would love to bring it back but well see how it goes, she said.

MEN: Mauricio Pochettino, the former Tottenham and Chelsea manager, will make his U.S.

coaching debut in a pair of friendlies, leading the team against Panama on Saturday night in Austin, Texas, and three days later in a road game against Mexico in Guadalajara.

Pochettino was not around for the first 26 matches of the World Cup cycle while Gregg Berhalter and three interim coaches were in charge.

These games are in the first of eight international windows Pochettino will have to evaluate players and develop tactics before the team reports ahead of the 2026 tournament.

WATER POLO HUSBAND DIES: Maddie Musselman Woepse, the U.S.

star, is mourning the loss of her husband, Pat, who died Thursday night from a rare form of lung cancer.

He was 31.

Pat Woepse was diagnosed with NUT carcinoma in September 2023.

Woepse, a former water polo player himself, set a goal of going to the Paris Olympics to watch his wife play and he made it.

BASKETBALL COLLEGE: Cameron and Cayden Boozer are following in the path of their father Carlos Boozer in playing basketball for Duke.

The twin brothers, both ranked as five-star prospects, announced their commitment in a video posted on The Players Tribune.

TENNIS SHANGHAI MASTERS: Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz advanced to a semifinal matchup in China.

Djokovic, a four-time champion in the event, rallied from a set down to beat Czech player Jakub Mensik 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Fritz earned a straightforward 6-3, 6-4 victory over David Goffin of Belgium.

In the other semifinal Saturday, top-ranked Jannik Sinner will face Tomas Machac.

WUHAN OPEN: Second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka beat Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-2, 6-2 and will meet fourth-ranked Coco Gauff in the semifinal.Wang Xinyu and Zheng Qinwen, both of China, are the other semifinalists.

GOLF LPGA: Sei Young Kim of South Korea held onto her lead with a 2-under 70 in the second round of the Buick LPGA Shanghai tournament.

Kim is one shot ahead of Lucy Li of the United States and Mao Saigo of Japan.

Li shot a 4-under 68 and Saigo carded a 7-under 65.

EUROPEAN: Thomas Detry shot a second-round 63 to share the lead with Dan Bradbury and Jesper Svensson at 9 under par midway through the Open de France at Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France AUTO RACING FORMULA 1: Toyota is returning to the circuit after 15 years as it becomes a technical partner of American racing team Haas.

There will be Toyota branding on the Haas cars starting from next weeks United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and the auto giants racing division will provide design, technical and manufacturing services to the North Carolina-based team.

HOCKEY NHL: The Colorado Avalanche will be without another forward in Jonathan Drouin due to an upper-body injury.

Drouins expected to miss at least two games before his injury is reassessed.

He didnt have a shot on goal in more than 21 minutes Wednesday night during a season-opening 8-4 loss at Vegas.
