Malik Washington wont be the only true freshman starting at quarterback in Saturdays in-state football showdown between Maryland and Towson.Andrew Indorf has piloted the Tigers to 54 points in back-to-back wins against Norfolk State and Morgan State.

He was named the Coastal Athletic Associations Rookie of the Week after the teams season-opening 27-7 victory at the Spartans on Aug.

28 and publicly lauded by Towson president Mark R.

Ginsberg as the latter broke down Tuesdays practice in a post-session huddle with the entire team.As nice as the accolades are, however, Indorf said that he has his sights set on a simpler accomplishment.Im not really looking for that.

Im looking for just going out there and playing football, he said.

The recognition is fun, getting all the fans to know your name, but Im out there to play football and do my job.

So thats the most important thing on my mind.Indorf ranks second in the CAA in completion rate (65.3%) and is tied for third in touchdown passes (four).

Although he has passed for only 186.5 yards per game, he has hit the right benchmarks with Tigers coach Pete Shinnick.I think hes studied the offense extremely well, he said Monday during a CAA coaches call via Zoom.

I think hes gotten a great rapport with his teammates.

Hes put himself in a great spot to understand what needs to be done [while] leading us to 2-0.

He hasnt thrown an interception.

So hes really done a lot of really good things and directed the offense at a very, very efficient level.Indorfs play has caught the attention of Terps coach Michael Locksley, a former Towson safety. We know a little bit about the kid, Locksley said, citing Maryland freshman linebacker Travares Daniel IIs familiarity with his former high school classmate.

Athletic.

He seems to be the guy that makes it go.

Hes been doing a good job of protecting the football for the most part.

Talented RPO system.

We do have to check his oil.

Weve got to do a great job, and [defensive coordinator] Ted [Monachino] will put a good plan together to try to change pictures up for a young quarterback.Indorf led St.

Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale to three Florida state championships, contributing to that team ranking No.

6 nationally in 2022 and No.

9 in 2023.

He was named the Florida Class 5A Football Player of the Year last fall and graduated as the schools all-time leader in passing yards (5,675), completions (416) and touchdown passes (66) while going 27-4.Recruited by Eastern Kentucky and Western Carolina, Indorf chose the Tigers thanks to his relationships with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Adam Neugebauer and Shinnick.I felt like it was more like a home, he said.

I really like Coach Neugs, who recruited me.

He was the first one.

He came to my house for a house visit and then Coach Shinnick.

The offense is just something that Id like to be a part of.Related ArticlesNavy center Toran Smith set to start against Tulsa his fathers alma materBig Ten football this weekend: Wisconsin faces major test at No.

But Indorf impressed the coaching staff with his grasp of the offensive schemes. For Andrew to win the spot and this is kind of what weve said he had to have done a lot of really, really good things, Shinnick said.

And he just took advantage of every opportunity that he was given.Indorf said Shinnick informed him of the coaches decision about a week before the first game against Norfolk State. My mindset was to compete for the job, he said.

I knew it was going to be hard with the older guys we got.

Nate, Sean, [redshirt freshman] Winston [Watkins] and [redshirt sophomore] Jack [Pellicciotti], they all gave me a great competition, and we all competed very well.

I just put in the work and earned the starring job.Senior wide receiver Zay Perkins, a Laurel resident and Pallotti graduate, said that Indorf won over the team with his confidence and easygoing nature.

He impressed the receivers by seeking their input on strengthening their relationships.Hes always ready to learn, Perkins said.

Hes always asking questions.

On certain routes, hes asking us where we like the ball, how we like this versus this look? Hes always ready to learn and is picking our brains.

So thats something that makes the process easier as well.Towson freshman quarterback Andrew Indorf has hit the right benchmarks with Tigers coach Pete Shinnick.

On third-and-11 with 36 seconds left at the Bears 18-yard line, Indorf lofted a fade to graduate student wide receiver John Dunmore in the back right corner of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. He threw a dime, and I made it happen, said Dunmore, who was covered tightly by senior cornerback Jadon Carter.

Weve got a lot of chemistry going on with the quarterbacks.

The timing of it was perfect.

I just got into my route, and I knew.As polished as Indorf appears, both Perkins and Dunmore said that they have to remind themselves that Indorf is still 18 years old.

His penchant for talking constantly on the field inflamed his defensive teammates during one preseason practice after the offense scored a touchdown.Indorfs gift of gab hasnt been an issue thus far.

But he said he wouldnt mind if an opposing defense took umbrage. If they take offense, theyre just focusing on me and not focusing on their job, he said with a smile.

So thats on them, not on us.Maryland quarterback Malik Washington has impressed in his first two college starts after starring at Spalding.

(Kim Hairston/Staff)A two-star recruit, Indorf is familiar with Washington, a four-star prospect who was regarded as the fifth-best quarterback in their recruiting class.

Indorf is looking forward to showcasing his talent on the same field as Washington, but understands he is not battling Washington. Its freshman versus freshman, but also Im going against their defense, not their quarterback, he said.

And I just want our defense to have a good game plan versus him, and then its up to us to go out there and execute against their defense. In high school, Indorf wore the No.

13 jersey, which he wears now and is considered unlucky by some athletes.

Indorf said that he is eager to reverse that perception.I actually like to break them, break the superstitions, he said.

Thats not controlling me.

My actual work and my play are going to control my destiny.Have a news tip? Contact Edward Lee at [email protected], 410-332-6200 and x.com/EdwardLeeSun..
