Jets Offense Surprisingly Stole the Show in Justin Fields’ Debut

Aaron Rodgers tearing his Achilles on his fourth snap as a New York Jet says all you need to know about the Jets quarterback misfortune over the last decade.
Jets fans are used to pitiful quarterback play.
Drafting Zach Wilson felt like a step in the right direction, until it wasnt.
Trading for Rodgers was an attempt to compensate for the Wilson blunder.
It failed drastically.
But after former Pittsburgh Steeler Justin Fields masterful performance on Sunday, New York may have its answer at the quarterback position after all.
Poise.
Accuracy.
Confidence.
Fields displayed all those traits on Sunday in addition to completing 72.7% of his passes and throwing for 218 yards and a touchdown.
It was a microcosm of New Yorks offensive success overall.
The Jets fell to the Steelers 34-32 in a thriller, but that shouldnt negate the stellar offensive showing from Gang Green.
It was more than encouraging and hopefully a sign of things to come this season.

Wilson played just eight games due to the COVID-plagued season, but shined with 723 yards.
He constantly evaded defenders, showcased his multifaceted route tree and was an outstanding deep threat.
Who was his quarterback? Fields.
While the two didnt win a national title together at OSU, they made the College Football Playoff twice with ease.
The Buckeyes offense put up 70 points in two games in 2019 , and 56 against its arch-rival Michigan.
That success translated into Sundays clash vs Pittsburgh.
Wilson hauled in 7-of-9 targets from Fields, accumulating 95 yards and a touchdown.
The former Buckeyes looked in sync all afternoon, commanding a New York offense that showed glimpses of being a formidable unit in 2025.
With 25 seconds to go in the first quarter and New York driving, Fields uncorked a deep ball to the right corner of the endzone.
Just like his college days, Wilson was there, and he tiptoed past the goal line to give the Jets a 9-7 lead.
Fields ball placement was on point, and Wilsons concentration was even better for the score.
That became a trend throughout the game.
Up 19-17 late in the third quarter, Fields found Wilson on 2nd-and-10 for a gain of 21.
The next play, Fields scored off a bootleg to extend New Yorks lead to nine.
There will be hiccups at times this season; it may not always be pretty.
But as seen throughout the NFL, chemistry and communication are vital to success.
After a strong Week 1 showing from the former Buckeyes, the Jets should feel satisfied.
Run Game New Yorks run game was nonexistent too often in 2024.
Breece Hall eclipsed 100 yards just once, averaged a career-low 4.2 yards per carry and seemed to have lost his elusiveness and burst two qualities that defined his explosive rookie campaign.
Rodgers was immobile and couldnt escape pressure.
Backup running back Braelon Allen was mainly inefficient.
Tyrod Taylor was barely used in package plays.
But a switch flipped in Week 1.
On the Jets first play from scrimmage, Hall weaved through Pittsburgh defenders for an 18-yard gain.
New York clearly established a run-first identity on the drive, and Halls 31 yards were a significant part of that.
Hall finally looked like his rookie self.
He evaded tacklers, displayed solid vision and tallied 107 yards, which wouldve been his second-highest total in 2024.

His improved efficiency will be vital to New Yorks offense sustaining this production.
A dual-threat quarterback was an element the Jets offense missed in 2024.
Bringing in Fields, even as a bridge quarterback, will add another key layer to Gang Greens rushing attack.
Fields impressed immediately on Sunday.
New Yorks signal caller ran for two touchdowns and 48 yards, adding a dynamic aspect that the Jets havent seen since Geno Smith in 2014.
Strong Offensive Line Play Holding, offense number #64 and 10-yard penalty, repeat third-down are two phrases Jets fans have constantly heard over the past decade a time period plagued with atrocious offensive line play.
Holdings, false starts, missed blocks.
You name it, the Jets offensive line has struggled with it recently.
On Sunday, however, it looked like a completely different unit.
For the better.
Rookie tackle Armand Membou was sensational in his debut.
His 89.0 PFF grade ranked first among all tackles, and according to the site, he didnt allow a single pressure or quarterback hit.
Against a ferocious Pittsburgh pass rush that many rookie offensive linemen would struggle with, Membou looked like a seasoned veteran and future All-Pro.
ladies and gentlemen, @PFF 's top-rated O-lineman in Week 1, Armand Membou pic.twitter.com/gVLTNkMkbR New York Jets (@nyjets) September 9, 2025 Due to guard Alijah Vera-Tuckers season-ending torn triceps injury , Joe Tippmann moved from center to guard.
It was far from a simple switch, but Tippmann didnt surrender a sack.
Vera-Tucker was a jack-of-all-trades of the line and could play anywhere but center.
Tippmanns versatility should allow him to do the same.
Tackle Olu Fashanu was also relatively solid.
Josh Myers and John Simpson were serviceable and the Jets offensive line was a strength for the first time in years..
