49ers GM comments on Brock Purdy's injury, Mac Jones starting in Week 2

A Thursday report revealed that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy could miss anywhere from two to five games while dealing with left shoulder and toe injuries.
Backup Mac Jones is set to start in place of Purdy when the 49ers face the 0-1 New Orleans Saints in Week 2 on Sunday.
During a Thursday appearance on San Francisco sports radio station KNBR, 49ers general manager John Lynch suggested the club received good news regarding Purdy's potential return to the lineup.
How bad are the Brock Purdy setbacks? "Going into the scans and all that, I'll tell you that the feeling was more on the positive side than what it could have been going in there," Lynch said about Purdy's status, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone.
"That was a good thing.
We look forward to getting Brock back, but in his stead, we're confident in Mac and his ability to compete at a high level for us." Purdy was banged up as he completed 26-of-35 pass attempts for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in San Francisco's 17-13 win at the Seattle Seahawks on Sept.

According to Pro Football Reference, he ended Week 1 ranked ninth in the NFL with an 80.3 adjusted QBR and 16th with a 92.2 passer rating.
Lynch repeatedly stated that Purdy has a "week-to-week" designation.
Still, it's unclear if the 25-year-old will be able to play in San Francisco's home game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept.

John Lynch is excited to see what Mac Jones will do For years, rumors have circulated that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to take Jones instead of Trey Lance with the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Jones' three-season stint with the New England Patriots was filled with more lows than highs, and he most recently made seven starts for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.
Per Pro Football Reference, Jones ended the 2024 campaign ranked 34th out of 36 qualified players with a 36.6 adjusted QBR and an 80.5 passer rating.
"We're really pleased to have Mac here," Lynch added.
"Mac was a guy, back in the draft process, we studied a lot, really liked.
He has had his ups and downs in his NFL career, but since he's been a part of us, really has taken to our offense, really fits our culture.
He can run our offense, and run it well, and we don't have to change a whole lot when he's out there.
So, I'm excited to see him get an opportunity to go show what he can do." As of Thursday afternoon, ESPN BET continued to list the 49ers as 3.5-point favorites over the Saints..
