BOSTON Manager Alex Cora wouldnt say whether Kyle Harrison , the lefty who the Red Sox acquired from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade , is the leading candidate to start Wednesday vs.

Cleveland.

Theres a lot of guys that were considering, Cora said Monday before Bostons three-game series opener against the Guardians .

The Red Sox need a starter for Wednesday, preferring to give rookie Payton Tolle extra rest after he made his MLB debut Friday.

Tolle never pitched on regular rest in the minors this season.

He always received at least one extra day between starts.

Its TBD the last day obviously understanding Tolles workload, Cora said yesterday.

We have to be cautious with that.

The 24-year-old Harrison is 4-2 with a 3.65 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, .263 batting average against,48 strikeouts and 26 walks in 11 starts (49 13 innings) for Worcester.

He went 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, .235 batting average against, 24 strikeouts and 11 walks in five starts (23 innings) during August.

The Red Sox also could use an opener Wednesday, especially considering they have an off day Thursday to rest the entire bullpen.

Additionally, Boston has Brayan Bello starting here Monday and Garrett Crochet starting Tuesday.

Bello has pitched six or more innings in 13 of his past 16 starts and hasnt pitched fewer than five innings during that stretch.

Crochet has pitched at least six innings in 20 of his 27 starts and has pitched fewer than five innings only once this season.

So history shows the Red Sox bullpen should be rested for Wednesday.

It might not be only a spot start for Harrison if the Red Sox do decide to call him up Wednesday.

The Sox could also keep him on the active roster to pitch Sept.

10 against the Athletics to again give Tolle an extra day.

Boston then could use a normal five-man roster for the final 15 regular games remaining as they have three off days (Sept.

11, 15, 22) mixed in.

Boston could option Harrison and carry an extra reliever during the final 15 games.

The Red Sox still have not committed to Tolle remaining in the starting rotation for the rest of the year.

Using him out of the bullpen including as a multi-inning reliever following an opener remains an option.

More Red Sox coverage.
