OU "Tailgate on the Oval" making history, here's what you can expect

NORMAN, Okla.

(KFOR) University of Oklahoma fans were able to set up their tents on the campus' North Oval for the first time in the school's history Friday.Tailgating on the North OvalThe University of Oklahoma is allowing free, public tailgating for the first time ever on the Parrington Oval, also known as the North Oval.

The university is encouraging fans to respect the historic part of campus during the busy game day.Boomer Bash, OUs alumni tailgate, will also move to the North Oval.Tailgating in the North Oval is subject to a drop-off process:Fans started setting up Friday from 6-8 p.m.Fans can also set up Saturday starting at 7 a.m.Fans can drop-off tailgating items at the West Boyd Street-South University Blvd.

intersection.Fans will only have 15 minutes to drop-off supplies and have to move vehicles.There will be no public parking in the North Oval for tailgaters and violating it could result in your vehicle being towed.Fans are encouraged to show their Sooner Spirit with Crimson or Cream tent tops.Public tailgating is bring-your-own-setup; fans should plan to provide their own supplies (tents, chairs, tables, food, power, etc.)What does the tailgate set up of the Oval look like?News 4 visited the tailgate drop-off event Friday evening.

University employees say at least 200 flags have been set up designating spots for each individual tent.

Irrigation and re-sodding of the North Oval was done by the university over the summer break.University of Oklahoma welcomes largest freshman class in state historyFans will immediately notice a large 'Oklahoma U' sign at the entrance of the Oval that was part of the improvements.

Directly past that is the Boomer Bash area.

Signage has been posted, and the area has been blocked off from the public tailgate area to avoid any confusion.

Past the Boomer Bash area is where the general public can claim spots.

Dozens of tents had already been set up Friday evening when News 4 visited the Oval, and spots appeared to be going fast.

Monitors and sound systems were in the process of being set up for fans, in addition to games for family and kids."Once we saw everything, you start to get that feeling, getting excited, you know, your friends are going to be here tomorrow.

Family is going to be here tomorrow," said Brian Jackson, an OU alum planning to tailgate on the oval for the first time.Jackson said there was some initial anxiety over the drop-off process; but getting there early allowed him and his family a smooth experience compared to trying to tackle set-up last minute on game day."This is, it's one heck of an environment for sports," said Jackson.

"I expect us to have an incredible season.

News 4 asked Stewart if he believes it will help or hurt business.I think itll help, said Stewart.

I definitely think itll help.Stewart said the tailgating change gives more fans nearby a chance to walk a short distance to Campus Corner and celebrate with fellow fans..
