College basketball: West grad Mayfield will be inducted

Staff report CLEVELAND In December 2011 West Rowan graduate Rashonda Mayfield made the game-winning shot to lift Voorhees to a 61-60 win against St.

Thomas.

Mayfield made a lot of plays like that during her basketball career at Voorhees, a small HBCU college in Denmark, S.C.

She will be inducted into the Voorhees Sports Hall of Fame this Saturday night.

Mayfield scored 1,074 high school points for good West Rowan teams, graduating in 2006.

She was consistent, smooth and solid, a tough rebounder for a guard, but she wasnt the biggest or the quickest, so she was overlooked by most schools.

Voorhees gave her a chance and she thrived in NAIA basketball.

In 2011, she led Voorhees to victory in a tournament held for independent NAIA schools.

She was the leading scorer in the championship game with 16 points..
