Softball: Peak to Peak’s Maggie Wallis among local stars headed into the postseason

LAFAYETTE For years, Peak to Peak coach Brandin Becher has been asking slugger Maggie Wallis if she is finally interested in pursuing softball in college.
For years, shes declined.
In an alternate world, Wallis would be fielding interest across the country in the midst of a nationally-touted season, where she is in the top 10 in hitting, on-base and slugging percentage among the seven states that play in the fall.
Perhaps its that same thoughtful approach she takes to every at-bat that long ago pointed her towards getting a military scholarship at The Citadel instead.
Shes never budged.
Every year, I say, Hey, you ready to play college yet? Nope.
Nope.
She knew three years ago what she was going to do, Becher said ahead of the Pumas regular-season finale win against The Academy on Thursday.
Shes just very driven, very motivated and she knows what she wants.
And she goes and gets it.
No different at the plate, where her 2024 numbers mimic a stats typo.
The two-time all-state selection hit around .550 the past two seasons, paling in comparison to a senior season that should put her in 3A-player-of-the-year conversation.
She is batting .736 and has reached base in 81% of her plate appearances.
Asked to explain well, how in the word? in terms of the numbers shes putting up, she referred to MLBs all-time home run king Barry Bonds.
I saw a TikTok one time of Barry Bonds, and he was explaining how if someone can catch a ball with a glove, theres no difference catching a ball with a bat, she said.
Knowing I can catch it behind the plate, theres no reason I cant when Im at-bat.
Easy enough.
Not really.
Wallis behind 24 extra-base hits and nine home runs will lead the 3A No.
13 Pumas into regionals next weekend.
Thirty-two teams will make the cut in 5A, 4A and 3A.
Peak to Peak is hoping to advance to the 16-team state tournament on Oct.
25-26 after it bowed out in regionals last year, ending a two-year state run.
We win and lose as a team, Wallis said.
But if there is anything I can do personally to help the team and take off other peoples shoulders, thats what Im here for and thats what Im trying to do.
Wallis hasnt been the only notable softball star around town, either.
Six miles from her high school, 5A No.

Those two have been among 5As best as has teammate Lauren Martinez, who is hitting .610 as has Julia Savage down U.S.
