Larry Bird Confessed Not Being Close to His Daughter Because of Ex-Wife in 1993

NBA stars may be in the public eye because of their skills on the court, but much more goes into a person than their talent at hooping.

Every player has a personal life, which consists of tremendous highs and astounding lows.

Take Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird for instance.

For his fans, he could do no wrong.

But ask him about his daughter and he will tell you its not a relationship hes proud of.In 1976, Bird and his ex-wife, Janet Condra filed for divorce.

The once love birds had a connection so strong it seemed it would never sever.

Unfortunately, they didnt end on the best of terms and as it happens often, the casualty in all of this was his daughter, Corrie.After the 1991-92 NBA season, Bird decided to retire from the game of basketball.

A year later, in 1993, the Boston Celtics hosted a retirement ceremony for the legendary forward.

Corrie was 15 years old at that time and reached out to her father to attend the momentous occasion.

She didnt receive a response.John Gearan of the Worcester Telegram was the first person to report on this incident.

Bird declined to speak on the matter until the launch of his autobiography Drive: The Story of My Life.I cant honestly say Ive had that much to do with her life because of my differences with Janet [Corries mother].

I think about Corrie all the time, but what can I really do now? Bird said.Birds situation isnt like an ordinary person who could receive custody of Corrie for weekends.

The life of an NBA player meant his schedule was rarely free.

It didnt help that his relationship with Janet was an issue as well.The three-time NBA champion understands where we went wrong.

But he can distinguish that none of it is his daughters fault.I cant go back and relive the first five or six years of her life.

Corrie is a fine and beautiful young lady, Bird said.

Shes good at everything she does, and Im really proud of her.

To tell you the truth, Ive never really known how to handle the situation.Corrie has since grown into a fine woman and is now 48 years old.Bird grew up a family man and never intended to hurt his daughter.

I love her, and anytime Corrie needs anything, I will be there for her, Bird declared.The extent of the father-daughters current relationship is unclear.

But Bird certainly has enough time now to make up for the years he wasnt able to be there for Corrie.
