John Wall recently announced his retirement from the NBA after two years out of the league.

Wall will be best remembered for his nine seasons with the Washington Wizards from 2010 to 2019.

He was widely regarded as one of the best point guards in the NBA, behind Stephen Curry , Russell Westbrook, and Chris Paul.

Unfortunately, successive long-term injuries meant that he didnt finish his professional basketball career in the way he would have liked.

Boston Celtics guard Derrick White has now reflected on something remarkable that happened before Wall was even drafted into the NBA .

Wall was an excellent player in high school for both Garner Magnet and Word of God, and was invited to play in the Nike Hoop Summit and Jordan Brand Classic.

The five-star recruit had arguably the greatest mixtape dedicated to him of any player, which Derrick White remembers watching at the time.

I feel like hes a consensus top five, and thats being [cautious].

Hes probably top three, White said on his podcast.

John Wall was going crazy.

Any right-handed person who dunks left-handed, I think it automatically makes you look cooler.

He was one of the first people I really paid attention to, and maybe thats why I like him so much.

I was watching the John Wall mixtape like, This is so awesome.

He then made another bold claim about Walls high school basketball career: That athleticism is probably unmatched, honestly.

Derrick White reflects on John Walls retirement from the NBA Derrick White also told a story of his first interaction with John Wall during a regular-season game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets .

The Celtics star was particularly impressed with Walls speed, even though he had already undergone surgery on his knee and Achilles tendon by then.

Legend.

John is special.

He was always super nice to me, White recalled his first in-person impression of Wall.

We were competing one time in Houston, and he hit a three.

I came down and hit a three.

He was like, I like that young fella, keep going.

I was like, Thanks, John.

I did not expect that from him.

This was post-injuries, and he was still fast.

Before his injuries and before I was even in the league, I could only imagine how fast he was and guarding him with his speed.

Those teams in Washington were fun to watch.

I wish him the best of luck in retirement..
