UVI puts two on preseason all-HBCU Athletic Conf. basketball teams

Two players from the University of the Virgin Islands were named on the preseason all-HBCU Athletic Conferences mens and womens basketball teams, league officials announced Wednesday.

Buccaneers senior guard Jalil Langston was named to the mens second team, while sophomore guard Ashukamayah Phillips was named to the womens second team.

The HBCUACs preseason all-conference teams and players of the year were voted on by the conferences head coaches, who also voted on the preseason team rankings.

UVIs mens team, which finished ninth in the 10-team Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standings last season (8-15 overall, 6-10 conference), was predicted to finish 11th in the 13-team HBCUAC this season.

Meanwhile, UVIs womens team, which also finished ninth in the 10-team GCAC standings last season (3-18 overall, 3-13 conference), was predicted to finish 13th in the 13-team HBCUAC this season.

The 6-foot-3 Langston, a Suffolk, Va., native who previously played for Virginia Peninsula Community College in Hampton, Va., started 21 of the Buccaneers 22 regular-season games last season.

He was second in scoring at 13.8 points per game and third in rebounding at 3.8 per game.

The 5-7 Phillips, a St.

Thomas native, appeared in all 20 regular-season games for the Lady Buccaneers, leading the team in scoring as a freshman at 13.7 points per game.

She was also second in assists at 2.1 per game, and fourth in rebounding at 4.5 per game.

Southern University-New Orleans Jamal Gibson was named the HBCUACs mens preseason player of the year, and was joined on the preseason first team by SUNO teammate Tyon Thompson, Philander Smith Universitys Raymond Reece, Dillard Universitys Tory Cargo and Tougaloo Colleges Antonio Patterson.

Langston was joined on the preseason second team by Philander Smiths Amorey Womack, Wiley Universitys Demarius Pitts, Dillard Universitys Armond Williams and Fisk Universitys Michael Ashley.

Dillards Cassidy Lowe was named the HBCUACs womens preseason player of the year, and was joined on the preseason first team by Southern-New Orleans Jordan Harris, Fisks Jayla Bibbs, Philander Smiths Ari Winston and Oakwood Universitys Trenisha Adams.

Phillips was joined on the preseason second team by Philander Smiths Dasia Turner, Tougaloos Morgan Williams, Stillman Colleges Farrah Pearson and Talladega Colleges LaDaja Caldwell..
