Former Alabama running back could be on the move soon after being a multi-year starter for his current NFL team

Former Alabama running back could be on the move soon after being a multi-year starter for his current NFL team originally appeared on A to Z Sports. The NFL is gearing up for the start of its season, which is set to get underway with the Dallas Cowboys traveling to Philadelphia on Thursday, Sept.

4 to take on the Eagles.

That's still over two weeks away though, so the league continues to try to tweak rosters to get off the best start possible. On Sunday, that meant former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III getting traded from the Houston Texans to the Eagles in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant and a pick swap.

Surprisingly, he might not be the only former Crimson Tide star to get traded in the coming days.Soon after the Metchie news was announced, NFL insider Jordan Schultz tweeted that the Washington Commanders, yet another team in the NFC East along with the Cowboys and Eagles, have been shopping former Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr.View the original article to see embedded media."Sources: The #Commanders have been shopping RB Brian Robinson Jr.

to teams around the NFL," Schultz's tweet reads.

"The former 3rd-round pick out of Alabama is entering the final year of his contract."Robinson was originally selected by Washington in the third round (No.

98 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Through three seasons, the now 26-year-old has played in 41 regular season games for Washington, racking up 2,329 yards and 15 touchdowns on 570 carries, which is good for a 4.1-yard average.

He's also added another 587 yards and five touchdowns on 65 receptions, giving him close to 3,000 total yards in his career. If you can believe it, the emergence of seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt might've made Robinson expendable.

Croskey-Merritt began his career at Alabama State (2019-22) before transferring to New Mexico in 2023 and then Arizona in 2024.

He's been effective this preseason, and the Commanders still have Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez at the position. What would a package look like for Robinson? That remains to be seen, but the move would save Washington $3.33 million in salary for the 2025 season.

And with a lower-body injury slowing Robinson down last season, he seemed to have lost some of his physical edge.

But whoever trades for him is getting a guy who can add something on all three downs.Robinson spent five seasons at Alabama (2017-21).

He started his career as a late game, mop-up duty closer, both in 2017 and 2018, before starting to get more run in 2019.

He spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons as the primary backup to Najee Harris while racking up 1,074 total yards (924 rushing, 150 receiving) and 11 touchdowns. After Harris moved on to the NFL after the 2020 season, Robinson finally got his chance to top Alabama's depth chart.

He rewarded that decision by handling a true workhorse role, producing 1,639 total yards (1,343 rushing, 296 receiving) and 16 scores on 306 touches (271 carries).

The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder got close to 200 carries more than the next running back (Trey Sanders), and helped the Tide reach another national championship under then head coach Nick Saban. He'll always be known as a gritty competitor who didn't mind putting his body on the line. This story was originally reported by A to Z Sports on Aug 18, 2025, where it first appeared..
