Bills add insult to injury after one of the lone bright spots is forced out of the game plus other takeaways from preseason loss

There wasn't a whole lot of good from the Buffalo Bills during their preseason loss against the Chicago Bears in Week 2 of the NFL preseason.

Chicago rolled out both their first team offense and defense.

For Buffalo, hardly any starters played on both sides of the football .

The 38-0 loss was brutal, but it's the preseason.

An incredibly boring game that impacts nothing in the regular season.

One of the lone bright spots was Jordan Hancock, who wound up with a shoulder injury early in the second half that forced him out of the remainder of the game.

Hancock showed up in a big way During the first series on defense, even with Cole Bishop making a return, Buffalo was gashed.

Now, it was mostly comprised of second and third-string players, but with Damar Hamlin missing a tackle and Bishop looking out of sorts at times, it left a bad taste in our mouths.

Caleb Williams played two series Sunday night vs.

the Bills.

He completed six-of-10 passes for 130 yards, one touchdown and a 130.0 passer rating.

The fifth-round DB was making waves throughout the contest, mostly in his ability to help stop the run.

While he had some miscues in coverage, he was explosive and all over the football field.

Exactly what you'd expect from a rookie with raw talent, not everything is going to be perfect.

After playing almost the entire first half at safety, Hancock lined up in the nickel corner position coming out of halftime.

That's when disaster struck.

Can we not have nice things? While making a tackle, Hancock was slow to get up and was in clear pain.

After a few moments spent with trainers, Buffalo Bills PR released that he would be out for the rest of the game with a shoulder injury.

Bills Mafia just weren't allowed to have fun, I guess.

Injury Update: DB Jordan Hancock (shoulder) is out for the game.

Buffalo Bills PR (@BuffaloBillsPR) August 18, 2025 Our takeaway : It was nice having Bishop back on the field after missing time and not getting any meaningful reps in for his second-straight training camp .

It showed on the field as he looked nowhere near game-ready.

Hancock was explosive, but raw.

We were excited about the opportunity to see more of him in the second half.

All that's left to do is wait for official word from the team on the severity of his injury.

Hamlin was not good...

at all.

Random question: Is Justin Simmons available? QB2 battle is locked up Heading into the matchup, it was clear that Mike White was going to get a bulk of the work to start the contest.

After a strong camp and slow-but-eventual good showing from Mitch Tribusky in the preseason game against the Giants, it was White's time to show he has what it takes to jump up on the roster.

Unfortunately, the veteran quarterback left much to be desired and finished his day going four for 11 with 54 yards.

Dropped passes were an issue, too.

Mike White and rookie TE Keleki Latu can't connect and the Bills will punt it away.

It was also a really bad night for him.

Overall, it was an ugly day for football from a quarterback perspective, which makes us that much more grateful for Josh Allen .

He finished his day going seven for 13 with 55 yards.

Our takeaway : While Tribusky didn't do much better, White's inability to be productive could be his downfall.

It was already going to be a difficult task for Mitch to lose the QB2 battle.

With only one preseason game remaining, Mike White has a tough task ahead of him.

Tyrell Shavers should make the roster Another one of the lone bright spots in the contest was Shavers, as he battles for a spot on the 53-man roster .

The training camp darling made a strong push in the 2024 season to earn a spot, but fell just short.

While it was a lopsided affair, Shavers made sure to make an impact on the contest.

Tyrell Shavers just keeps making plays.

The second-year receiver burned his defender at the line of scrimmage for a would-be touchdown.

Unfortunately, White sailed it long as the ball bounced off Shaver's fingertips and fell incomplete.

Tyrell Shavers with a great release and route.

Mike White has to make this throw.

...

but another win by Shavers.

While registering his first catch of the preseason, the former Jets and Browns pass-catcher let two passes hit the dirt with some costly drops.

In a game of inches and when everything you do is under the microscope, Shavers may have edged out Moore for one of the last few spots on the roster.

Drops just can't happen, especially in this situation.

Sean McDermott has stressed the importance of some of the lower guys on the roster needing to be multi-dimensional to secure a spot .

Another reason we saw Brandon Coddrington featured so heavily on the defense.

Shavers getting some love on special teams goes a long way, while also making sure to show up for the offense (even in a blowout).

Our takeaway : Shavers has the fanbase excited, and it's not hard to see why.

Somehow, someway, he shows up during some of these big moments during the preseason.

Getting blown out is ugly, but at least we got one pretty cool catch from the talented receiver.

Moore has his work cut out for him with only one preseason game remaining.

It's just the preseason, everything will be alright It just didn't feel like the Bills' night in any facet of the game.

Frank Gore Jr impressed, but wound up with a costly fumble in the red zone.

Hancock was gaining momentum and then was out of the game with a shoulder injury.

Buffalo Joe flashed, but just seemed a step behind throughout the contest.

Not a great day of football, but a day with football (even preseason) is better than a day without it.

I have to repeatedly tell myself that, with just how bad the game truly was.

Last preseason, Buffalo also lost to Chicago , an ugly game where Josh Allen and a bulk of the starters on both sides of the football made an appearance in the contest.

The sky wasn't falling then, and it shouldn't be now.
