Antelope High School makes district history with two female kickers on varsity football team

ROSEVILLE, Calif.
Antelope High School made district history on Friday night as its varsity football team kicked off the season with two female kickers on the roster.
Junior Olivia Richardson and senior Miley Phillips both said the team feels like a family to them.
"It's just a great place to be," Richardson said.
Richardson joined the team last year after her brother, a former kicker at Antelope High School, convinced her to give it a shot.
"Everyone's kind to me.
Everyone's very nice, you know.
I love my brothers and, you know, they love their sisters, she said.
Miley Phillips made the decision to join the team this season.
"Seeing that Olivia was on the team last year, it really inspired me because I was like, Oh, like it's possible for a girl to be on the football team and kick," Phillips said.
Both use their soccer skills to help them on the football field.
"Girls are both great.
They condition like the boys.
They get in hitting drills.
They do everything they're supposed to do and theyre out here having fun," said head varsity coach Juwan Hurd.
He said he hopes they can serve as an inspiration.
"There are a lot of girls that think they can't, you know, or they shouldn't because of what the fear is going to be, you know, from hearing from their classmates or peers.
But if these girls can do it, I think anybody can, Hurd said.
While they are the first at their school and in the district, Richardson and Phillips hope they aren't the last.
"Trying new things is the best thing for you to do.
You live once, so go out and do it," Richardson said.
"They're a whole family.
Like, just try it out, give it a shot.
And I think a lot of people will enjoy it, Phillips said.
Phillips plans to pursue kinesiology in college and become a firefighter after graduation, while Richardson aims to play college soccer and become a sports broadcaster.
