Giants QB Jaxson Dart sends strong message on sitting behind Russell Wilson at the beginning the 2025 NFL Season

When the New York Giants drafted Jaxson Dart 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, no one thought he'd play this well this soon.
Dart has the athletic tools and accuracy to start in the NFL, but he was deemed a project that would take time to develop.
Three preseason games later, and that narrative has completely shifted.
During the Giants' preseason, Dart finished with 372 yards, four touchdowns, and completed 68% of his passes.
With his limited passing attempts, he showed no hesitation or timidness.
He flashed an ability to evaluate plays quickly while staring down pressure.
Most importantly, his energy and personality have captured the hearts of Giants fans.
In a city that needs a vocal leader with aura, Dart has epitomized what New York hopes to have in a starting quarterback.
This rapid rise has made Giants fans question if Dart should start during the regular season sooner than initially anticipated.
It shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to consider starting Week 1 over Russell Wilson.
That seems unlikely at this current moment based on how head coach Brian Daboll has addressed this situation.
Dart addresses having to sit behind Wilson Despite likely sitting for the first half of the season, Dart is maintaining a team-first mentality.
When asked about this after the game, Dart clarified that he had to change his mindset.
"I'm just shifting my perspective to be the best teammate that I can be." Additionally, Dart championed the veteran Wilson for his performance during the preseason.
"Russ has completely earned that, role for him.
And, he's played amazing.
He's played elite ...
I just want to be the best teammate.
And I just want this team to win.
So, you know, whatever my role is for that to happen, I'm going to do that to the best of my ability." It's not as if Dart would have come out after the game, taking shots at Wilson or demanding to start.
But the Giants clearly have a leader in the making with the patience and intentionality he's displaying.
It also stands out how Dart views his fellow quarterbacks and the relationships he's established in the QB room.
"We're all really good players.
I think that everybody's kind of seen that throughout practices, throughout camp.
Like, we all operate at high levels ...
It's a really fun room to be a part of because it's super competitive that way.
And we have an amazing relationship between all of us.
But it's definitely fun.
We're all each other's biggest fans." While Dart will not start week 1, the biggest question now shifts to whether Dart will move up the depth chart above veteran Jameis Winston.
Winston joined the team this offseason, but his role may be obsolete.
The team not showing any signs of wanting to trade him complicates how they intend to maneuver who's the backup for the season opener..
