Sources: Chargers insured injured Slater's deal

Once Rashawn Slater 's $114 million contract was signed, the Los Angeles Chargers purchased an insurance policy on it that now is expected to earn them a salary cap credit of at least $9 million and possibly more next season, sources told ESPN on Monday.
Slater suffered a torn patella tendon last week that required surgery and ended his season.
It was, as coach Jim Harbaugh described, a "gut punch" for the franchise, but the insurance policy brings a small consolation.

The Chargers did on the deal that made Slater the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history -- and it will have cash and cap implications in 2026.
Slater's deal included a $29 million signing bonus, a $7 million roster bonus and a $2 milllon base salary.
The Chargers have insurance on the roster bonus and salary, along with $27 million of the signing bonus.
The Chargers also took out a similar policy on quarterback Justin Herbert 's five-year $262.5 million contract extension signed in July 2023.
The Chargers are hardly the first team to try to protect themselves against a significant contract.
The Chiefs took out a similar policy dare they signed Patrick Mahomes to a $450 million contract that included $140 million in guaranteed money.
