Not perfect in the sense of guaranteeing performance, but in how it lands almost exactly between his highest possible value and his lowest.

Nick Robertson Brings High-End Potential but Low-End Risk When healthy, Robertson has shown he can score at the pace of a $3 million player.

His shot is dangerous, he can create in tight spaces, and hes still only 23.

For a team looking to find scoring depth without overspending, that kind of offensive upside is hard to ignore.

Of course, the other side of Robertsons story is just as important.

Hes missed significant time with injuries, his size can be a disadvantage in certain matchups, and hes been scratched at times when his defensive game didnt match the coaching staffs expectations.

Factor all that in, and his value could be closer to league minimum $775,000.

Split the difference between $3,000,000 and $775,000 and you get $1,887,500.

The contract he signed? $1,825,000.

Thats about as close to meeting in the middle as it gets in the NHL.

Its not often a negotiation produces a number that so neatly reflects both the players upside and the teams concerns.

Why Robertsons Contract Makes Sense for the Maple Leafs For Robertson, the deal is a chance to stay healthy, produce, and earn a much bigger payday next time.

For the Maple Leafs, its a manageable cap hit for a player who could provide great value if he plays anywhere near his ceiling.

Sometimes, hockey contract negotiations are all about leverage, posturing, and drawn-out talks.

This one? It was simple: both sides assessed the upside and the risk, and found a number right in between.

Perhaps it didnt actually happen that way, but it makes sense if you examine it.
