Quinn Ewers Should Be the Backup QBI know, I know, its just a preseason game and you dont want to read too much into things. But they play the games for a reason, and when watching, some things are clear as day.One of those things after two preseason games now is that Quinn Ewers is the second-best quarterback on this team.Watching Zach Wilson play football is tough at times.Watching Ewers play is an entirely different feeling. While Ewers is still a bit raw, he still has parts of his game to work on.

You see someone who is improving day after day, (preseason) game after (preseason) game.Zach Wilson has repeated the same mistakes he made with the Jets, including holding onto the ball too long, staring down receivers, slow play processing, and a lack of pocket awareness, in the last two preseason games.Ewers, on the other hand, has one trait that no Miami Dolphins backup quarterback has had since 2020 and the arrival of Tua Tagovailoa in South Florida. His style of play is similar to that of Tuas.Ewers gets the ball out of his hands quickly and makes snap decisions.Im not saying his release is as fast as Tuas, but it aint far behind. For two preseason games now, Zach Wilson looks like a fish out of water running the Miami offense.Quinn Ewers, for a 7th round draft pick and a rookie, knows on every snap where he wants to go with the football and what he wants to do on that given play. The execution isnt always there, and thats ok.But the mental processing and the ability to get the ball out of his hands quickly are the aspects of the game you cannot teach.Ewers Saturday was 11 for 17 for 116.

yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers. We are seeing the healthy Quinn Ewers from Texas. We are seeing the Quinn Ewers, who was the #1 overall recruit coming out of High School. We are seeing the guy who, a year ago, this teams fans of some NFL teams were yelling Dont Win for Quinn in the vein of Suck or Luck and Tank for Tua.The talent is there. The improvement from week to week is there. And honestly, the upside is there with him. There is no upside right now with Zach Wilson. But look, this is the NFL, and it is a business.Miami signed Zach Wilson this offseason and gave him $6 million.Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel are not going to give up on Zach this fast.

If they did, they would look silly. So, while Ewers probably wont be QB2 out of the gate, in reality, he is the 2nd best quarterback on this roster. And more importantly, when Zach Wilson is gone in a year (because he only signed a 1 year deal), Miami has their QB2 of the future in Quinn Ewers. And who knows, if he continues to improve, maybe they will have more. The post Quinn Ewers Should Be the Backup QB appeared first on Miami Dolphins..
