For weeks, Sean McVay has avoided placing a label on Matthew Staffords back injury, simply saying hes been dealing with some soreness.

But on Wednesday morning, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network revealed an official diagnosis.According to Rapoport, Stafford has an aggravated disc in his back and received an epidural to help deal with the pain.

Rapoport maintains that the Rams are simply being cautious and still plan for Stafford to be ready for the season opener against the Houston Texans.This doesnt seem to change anything with regard to Staffords timeline, but it does indicate the level of pain hes dealing with.

Los Angeles has called him week-to-week, being cautious, but with plans for him to be ready for Week 1.

It's a smart approach, even if it's a worrisome one for fans who are concerned about Stafford's availability for the start of the season.McVay said after practice Tuesday that Stafford is "making good progress" and "he feels good," which is encouraging.
