GRAND FORKS UND landed a commitment from Merrimack winger Tyler Young on Monday to move a step closer to roster completion.Young projects to be a depth player for the Fighting Hawks, who will battle for a lineup spot. His numbers don't jump off the page.Young scored six goals and tallied 10 points in 29 games last season for Merrimack. But there are a few elements that make him an intriguing addition for the Fighting Hawks.First, Young's production came entirely at 5-on-5 an area where UND was lacking at times last season.

He did not register a power-play point at Merrimack and only spent a few minutes on the ice with the man advantage all season.Young actually had more even-strength goals last season (six) than some of UND's best goal-scorers.

Cameron Berg had four and Jayden Perron had three. He also scored four of his six goals against teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament, which was another challenge for some of UND's top players a season ago.Owen McLaughlin racked up 11 assists in 13 games against ranked teams, but he didn't score.

Perron had no goals and three assists in nine games against ranked teams all coming against Boston University in October.Young also helps UND balance its classes better. The Fighting Hawks have nine underclassmen among their forwards right now and will likely end up with 10.

That will give them a 5-10 split in upperclassmen to underclassmen forwards.

It would have been 4-11 had they gone with a rookie in Young's spot.Young won't end up on an all-National Collegiate Hockey Conference team at the end of the season, but he could be a good piece that fits into the puzzle.Spartans land Porter MartoneAnother top Canadian Hockey League player has committed to college.Winger Porter Martone, the No.

6 overall pick by the Philadelphia Flyers in June, gave a verbal commitment to Michigan State on Monday. With Martone, the Spartans will now have nine players who are top-50 NHL Draft picks including four first-rounders.That means six NHL first-round picks/expected 2026 first-rounders are leaving the CHL for the NCAA.

UND, Penn State and Michigan State are each getting two.Quick hits Former UND captain and Hobey Baker Award finalist Jordan Kawaguchi has re-signed with the Belfast Giants, a Northern Ireland-based team that plays in the top United Kingdom league.

Kawaguchi will again be teammates with old UND classmate Gabe Bast.
