Rays place Ha-Seong Kim on IL, bring back outfielder Jonny DeLuca
CINCINNATI Ha-Seong Kims back continued to remain sore enough for the Rays to place him on the 10-day injured list prior to Fridays game.Kim was replaced on the active roster by outfielder Jonny DeLuca, who last week started rehabbing at Triple-A Durham from an April right shoulder strain.DeLuca said he felt good enough to return, and after a pregame workout Rays officials agreed and made the move.Kim had been sidelined since leaving Mondays game with a stiff back.
Signed in February as he was recovering from October shoulder surgery, Kims rehab took longer than expected and he made his Rays debut on July 4.He had to leave that game with right calf tightness and returned to action on July 8.
He played on a somewhat regular (though not everyday) basis until Monday, when he was hurt on a headfirst slide into second base.DeLuca made the opening day roster but played in only nine games before being hurt.
He made an aborted rehab attempt in May, then started again earlier this month, playing two games with the Florida Complex League team and five with Durham. To make room for DeLuca on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated for assignment reliever Jacob Waguespack, who had been on the Triple-A injured list. Also Friday: Lefty reliever Mason Montgomery was recalled from Durham to take the open spot on the pitching staff, with manager Kevin Cash saying he had been pitching well there following his early July demotion.
Right-hander Joe Boyle, as expected, will move into the rotation in place of Taj Bradley, who was optioned to Durham after a rough Wednesday start.
