Penguins Eyeing Youth Movement Amid Trade Rumors
Penguins Eyeing Youth Movement Amid Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports.Veterans Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust of the Pittsburgh Penguins have both been names discussed around the NHL in potential trade deals.
As the Penguins try to enter into a rebuild, the front office has been searching for ways to move off a few players. Both Rust and Rakell can still produce at a high level, and any team could gain some massive productivity with a trade.
Last season, Rust scored 31 goals and 34 assists, while Rakell scored 35 goals and 35 assists.NHL insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic provided some updates on the situation around all the trade rumors around the Penguins."I havent a clue at this point.
Time will tell.
Penguins president/general manager Kyle Dubas isnt selling Rakell and Rust for peanuts, nor is he married to the idea of keeping them for the long term."Still, I keep going back to what several team sources have told me: Dubas wants to go young next season," Yohe wrote. With the Penguins looking to shift more toward a youth movement, it could open the door for some trades to come down the pipeline.
However, the asking price for both Rakell and Rust seems to be very high.Pittsburgh wants to fully enter a rebuild, but they can only do that if they receive some strong assets in return.
Both players have drawn a lot of interest around the league, and a late offseason move could be made. While it remains to be seen where each player will end up, it does seem like their time with the Penguins will be short-lived.
Pittsburgh has a lot to figure out while also trying to put as competitive a team as possible on the ice for next season. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 1, 2025, where it first appeared..
