Salmon Says: Why I don't cheer for my college alma mater

Its amazing to me how much local people know about college sports, and not just Nebraska college sports, but other schools in the country as well.
I get asked about the Husker football team often and how I think they will do this year.
I dont usually have an answer because I dont follow it.
Now before you stop reading, I dont follow any college football team.
I am an NFL guy.
Spending most of my childhood living in California, we cheered for the Huskers on TV, but that was about it.
I didnt follow college sports there, either, because we had professional teams, and thats who I followed.
I keep some tabs on Husker baseball, but thats about it.
I remember and saw some great Husker football players of the 1990s play and followed the team then, but I was in high school.
The Huskers rarely lost a game a season back then.
I think when I got to college and worked full-time and did classes full-time, I lost interest and didnt have time to follow much of any sports.
As a sports broadcaster and photographer, Ive met a lot of sports fans.
Many are very proud of their alma mater and keep an eye on their former institutions sports teams.
I dont do the latter, not because I dont care, but because I cant care.
Let me explain.
I graduated from Central Community College in Hastings, and as great a college as it is, we had no sports on that campus.
They have a gym but no sports teams.
I loved my time at CCC, and it helped me learn to do what I do now.
We just didnt have sports teams.
CCC in general has sports on its Columbus campus, The Raiders, but I didnt go to CCC in Columbus.
So when people wear sweatshirts and talk about and cheer for their former college team, I feel a tad out of place.
I dont have one.
No quirky mascots, no team chants and no team colors to discuss.
No former athletes to follow upon graduation.
Nothing.
I am thinking about getting a shirt made that said my college didnt have sports or something like.
Dont complain about your team; at least you had one.
At CCC in Hastings, we never demanded a coach be fired for losing three games in a season; we had no coaches.
No teams.
We had no bragging about recruits, no athletes.
So with my degree being in media arts/broadcasting and being educated at a school that didnt have sports, we had to learn play-by-play following local high school teams, which we did.
I dont hate college sports; I just dont really follow them.
So dont be surprised when I look like I am lost when you talk about Husker sports other than baseball.
Im listening, but not a follower..
