Hamilton: It's the end of the world as we know it (in the Top 25)

No, the earth didnt spin off its axis, and the seas arent boiling.

The sun rose in the east right on schedule Sunday morning.

Still, here were apocalyptic signs the night before as Miami and Cal put a bow on college footballs Week 6.

Never in the history of mankind has a pair of top-five SEC teams lost to unranked opponents on the same day.

Army and Navy are each 5-0 for the first time since 1945.

Indiana, at 6-0 and with a new coach, became the first team to clinch a bowl berth.

And we learned theres a legit chance that Florida State-Oregon State-Clemson quarterback D.J Uiagalelei gets a sixth year of eligibility .

Calamity! Chaos! Mass hysteria! Its a lot to wrap our minds around.

Yet half the regular season remains, and were still four weeks away from the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2024.

Therefore were obligated to unpack it all, even if it might rattle us to our core like a big-budget disaster movie.

So lets channel the tones of Don LaFontaine, AKA that movie voiceover guy and take inventory of the carnage.

Hamilton: Some shake-ups, but Week 5 was otherwise smooth sailing In a world where nearly a third of ranked teams lost ...

Earthquake: Four top-10 teams lost, creating a seismic shift from the top to the bottom of these rankings .

Incredibly, not one team whether it won, lost or even had the week off maintained its place from last week.

And the SEC really took it on the chin, albeit a self-inflicted blow, by having three of its top-10 teams lose conference games to underdogs.

Armageddon: It sure seems like the end of the world in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Alabamas 40-35 loss to Vanderbilt was an extra vicious gut punch given it also followed the Crimson Tides instant-classic win over Georgia.

It was also historic.

The Commodores (3-2, 1-1 SEC) were previously 0-60 against top-five opponents.

It was their first win over the Tide since 1984.

Alabama had won the three previous matchups by a combined score of 148-3.

And those 40 points Vandy scored? Those were its most against Alabama since a 78-0 win ...

in 1906.

Alabama is still a good football team and likely headed to the CFP.

It slipped out of the top spot, but is still situated nicely at No.

4, for now.

The Commodores, though historically awful, are a legit team in 2024.

Vandy is also 1-0 in trolling the Tide (4-1, 1-1).

As fans stormed the field (and thus getting the school handed a $100,000 fine from the ACC), a clip of Nick Saban talking with Pat McAfee played on FirstBank Stadiums video screen.

The only place you play in the SEC thats not hard, Saban said, is Vanderbilt.

Hamilton: Most teams don't pass 'Go' in Week 4 rankings The Perfect Storm: Arkansas beat Tennessee 19-14, proving that a good defense can still beat a juiced-up offense.

It was the Razorbacks first home win over a top-tive team since 1999 .

But, more importantly, it improved them to 4-2 (2-1 SEC) and was another feather in the cap of embattled coach Sam Pittman.

Tennessee, however, has gone from being perceived as elite to very good.

The Volunteers (4-1, 1-1 SEC) dropped six spots to 10th.

Twister: Iowa State keeps steadily gaining ground in the rankings and positioning itself as the class of the Big 12.

The Cyclones (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) rolled an outmatched Baylor 43-21.

And the next four games are definitely winnable beginning with a trip to West Virginia, followed by Central Florida, Texas Tech and at Kansas.

Iowa State could be a top-10 team going into a tough three-game stretch to end the regular season.

But those games (vs.

Cincinnati, at Utah, vs.

Kansas State) could also elevate the Cyclones profile and position it for a top-four spot in the CFP rankings.

Independence Day: Nebraska, SMU and Boise State broke into the rankings for the first time this season.

And each is notable for various reasons.

SMU (5-1, 2-0 ACC) won at Louisville 34-27, proving the Mustangs are worthy of its Power 4 status even if they bought their way into the club.

And three of their wins have come against P4 competition.

Nebraska (5-1, 2-1 Big 10) continued to make strides during Matt Rhules second season as head coach.

The Cornhuskers are one win away from being bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016.

Boise State (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West) is now the Group of 5s alpha team, having dispatched Utah State, 62-30.

And the Broncos might have the best player few folks on this side of the Rockies are discussing.

Ashton Jeanty, a junior running back, had 186 yards and three touchdowns against the aggies.

Hes already totalled 1,031 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 95 carries.

That comes out to an absurd 10.9-yard average.

The Poseidon Adventure: Miami's world was flipped on its head against Cal and it had to climb its way back up.

The Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 ACC) clawed back from a 25-point deficit to win at Cal 39-38.

QB Cam Ward led three fourth-quarter scoring drives and finished with 437 yards passing, two passing TDs and a rushing touchdown.

It was a game that started at 10 p.m., something that will be the new normal in an ACC thats draped across the land.

Starting the movement now for #ACCafterdark.

Here's what was damaged.

Hamilton: Gamecocks facing a tough stretch and some tough decisions 2012: Its been 12 years since Texas A&M and Missouri entered the SEC.

During that time, the Tigers have played in two SEC championship games (2013 and 2014) and were thought to be angling for another trip this year.

Texas A&M had the Johnny Football experience and the Jimbo Fisher experiment.

Enough said.

But the script was flipped a bit during Week 6.

Thats when the Aggies, under first-year coach Mike Elko, had its way with Missouri 41-10.

Along the way, Texas A&M (5-1, 3-0 SEC) exposed the Tigers as a CFP poseur and validated the Aggies' strong start.

It also thrust Texas A&M into the rankings at No.

15, something that helps push the Jimbo days deeper in the rearview mirror.

The Towering Inferno: Four teams Louisville, Iowa, UNLV and Southern Cal saw their top-25 status burn and collapse.

And Steve McQueen, Paul Newman or even O.J.

Simpson wasnt around to save them.

Deep Impact: Even with the rash of upsets, the SEC managed to take the pole position among conferences in the rankings.

There are now nine SEC teams in the top 25 thanks to Texas A&Ms entry.

The Big 10 drops to seven, with Iowa and Southern Cal both dropping out.

There are four Big 12 teams, while the ACC landed three in the rankings.

Boise State, of the Mountain West, is 23rd and the lone G5 team.

While 12th-ranked Notre Dame is the only independent, as usual.
