St.

Scholastica managed to experience the full range of football's emotions in less than two minutes elapsed, coughing up a two-touchdown lead with 1:45 to play and defeating Macalester anyway in a 30-28 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football thriller.

Saints quarterback Donald West completed four passes to move his team 71 yards in 43 seconds, the biggest a 36-yard catch and run to Alec Ralph that reached the Macalester 4-yard line.

The Saints took their final timeout and aligned for a 21-yard game-winning field goal knocked through by Jacob Andrews as time expired at Walt Hunting Stadium-Marv Heikkinen Field in Duluth.

ADVERTISEMENT The points were necessary after Macalester drove 54 yards in three plays for their first touchdown of the fourth quarter, then recovered an onside kick, drove 48 yards in three plays to score again and successfully went for two to take the lead, a process that took exactly 60 seconds of game time.

The Saints may have thought their position was secure after fourth-quarter touchdown runs from West and Jevon Williams gave them a 27-13 lead with 1:54 to play.

West was 23-for-37 passing for 275 yards, while both Nick Schlender (111 yards on 22 carries) and Williams (104 yards on nine carries) breached the 100-yard barrier.

Ricky Weber was CSS's leading receiver, catching six balls for 93 yards.

CSS (2-2, 1-1 MIAC) plays its next two games on the road, starting Saturday, Oct.

12 at Gustavus Adolphus.

VOLLEYBALL Saints fall to Saint Benedict A 14-kill performance from Kaitlyn Jones wasn't enough to lift St.

Scholastica past Saint Benedict, which claimed a 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19) MIAC volleyball win in Duluth on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints were clean and consistent, hitting better than .200 in each of the last three sets but only winning one of them.

The Bennies held narrow advantages in kills in both the third and fourth as the teams made equal numbers of attack errors.

Ava Swangstue and Cassidy Lustig finished with 10 kills apiece for CSS, which got four blocks from Mesabi East alum Lindsey Baribeau.

Grace Myhre set the Saints with 41 assists, while Bryn Ziegler had a team-leading 23 digs.

ADVERTISEMENT The Saints (8-9, 1-2 MIAC) were to travel to Wisconsin-Stout on Tuesday night.

MEN'S SOCCER Saints stymied at Carleton Dylan Stiffler scored six minutes in, then again about eight minutes from the end, for Carleton in a 3-0 MIAC men's soccer win over St.

Scholastica on Saturday afternoon in Northfield, Minnesota.

Jonathan Vonderlage had the other Carleton goal, in the 61st minute, which proved more than enough against a CSS offense that generated only three shot attempts, two of them on target, for the game.

Ben Hallberg made four saves for the Saints (3-8-1, 1-3 MIAC), scheduled to host Wisconsin-River Falls on Tuesday afternoon.

WOMEN'S SOCCER Knights stick it to Saints St.

Scholastica fell behind after just 98 seconds and stayed there in a one-sided 6-0 MIAC defeat at Carleton on Saturday in Northfield, Minnesota.

Hadley Twitchell's second-minute opener was followed by two more Carleton goals in the first half and three in the second, while CSS had one off-target shot attempt for the 90 minutes.

Gracie Meagher made nine saves for CSS.

ADVERTISEMENT The Saints did end their losing streak in a Sunday non-conference game at Bethany Lutheran that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Kaitlyn Sautter's 53rd minute goal for CSS was canceled out only 77 seconds later by the Vikings' Elena Lujan Rubio, but CSS held on for a draw, putting 12 shots on target to the hosts' eight.

Meagher stopped seven shots for CSS.

The Saints (0-10-3, 0-5-0 MIAC) host Macalester on Saturday, Oct.
