NFL team takes next step in securing $3.7 billion stadium deal

The Washington Commanders met with D.C.
Mayor Muriel Bowser and district leaders as the NFL franchise seeks approval for their $3.7 billion stadium plans.
In May 2023, Josh Harris, David Blitzer, and their consortium featuring NBA legend Magic Johnson, among otherspurchased the franchise from Dan Snyder for $6.05 billion, ushering in an exciting new era.
The duo has overseen numerous changes, including the arrival of head coach Dan Quinn and quarterback Jayden Daniels .
The revitalized Commanders reached the NFC Championship Game last season but missed the chance to reach their first Super Bowl since Super Bowl XXVI.
However, the stadium is a key issue for the owners and franchise to overcome, especially with Donald Trump providing an obstacle .
Back in April, the Commanders struck a deal that will see D.C.
cover approximately $1 billion of the $3.7 billion stadium.
On Thursday, Commanders president Mark Clouse presented the teams case as they seek final approval at the RFK Stadium site.
This is a historic moment and one of extraordinary opportunity, Clouse said, per WTOP .
Together, we can deliver the fastest and surest transformation of the RFK site into something that brings people together, drives growth, and shows whats possible when public purpose and private commitment align.
Clouse claimed the project is expected to bring in $1.3 billion in gross revenue in its first year, of which 57 percent will be new net revenue to D.C.
and $800 million in direct spending.
Bowser referred to the deal as a BFD a "big f------ deal" in regards to serving as an economic driver for the area.
On Friday, council members, Im asking for your strong, unified vote to help shift our economy, grow jobs, grow business opportunities, and to bring our team home, Bowser said.
To borrow a phrase, this is a BFD.
Very big.

The NFC East franchise promised to cover any cost overruns as well as any maintenance costs.
Harris and Blitzer, who also own the NBAs Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL s New Jersey Devils , are under pressure to bring the Redskins nameand its iconic logoout of retirement.
Trump recently hit out at the franchise , referring to it as the Washington Whatevers.
Trump then suggested he could deny the Commanders a new stadium unless they cave to his demands.
On Truth Social, the 79-year-old posted: I may put a restriction on them that if they dont change the name back to the original Washington Redskins, and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, Washington Commanders, I wont make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington.
The RFK Stadium is set to be built on federal land leased to the DC government for the next 99 years, which means approvals from agencies like the National Capital Planning Commission and the U.S.
Commission of Fine Arts whose boards feature Trump appointees..
