Orioles’ Kade Strowd ‘lost control’ on pitch that hit George Springer in head

Theyre some of the longest minutes in sports.Orioles right-hander Kade Strowd left a sinker too far up and in to Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer on Wednesday night that hit him in the head, sending the four-time All-Star to the dirt.
He lay face down next to home plate for several minutes as the Camden Yards crowd held its collective breath before he managed to walk off the field with the help of some trainers. The one pitch, lost control, Strowd said Tuesday morning.
It was my first sinker of the day.
Just lost that one up and in.
Part of the game but you hate to see somebody, especially like George, go down like that, so hope hes all right. Its a long wait, thats for sure.
But yeah, never a good time on a baseball field.
Usually, theres a lot of good ones, but definitely not that one.Strowd, 27, was making his fifth career MLB appearance, mop-up duty in the ninth inning of the Orioles 11-4 win.
Pitching coach Drew French went out to check on him after the accident and Strowd pitched away from the next few batters before closing out the victory. His command has been a work in progress thus far as hes walked three batters and hit one in 6 1/3 innings.
But both he and interim manager Tony Mansolino maintained the pitch, which glanced off Springers shoulder and hit him in the ear flap of his helmet, wasnt intentional. He didnt mean to do that, thats an accident, Mansolino said.
Thats something that pitchers, a lot of times, that does affect them.
I just checked in with [Strowd] this morning.
He seemed OK, seemed fine.
Told him he was probably going to pitch today, its a doubleheader, so be ready to roll.Springer wasnt in the Blue Jays lineup for Game 1 of their doubleheader Tuesday but he remained with the team, and MLB.com reported that he was feeling better.
The 35-year-old is enjoying one of the better seasons of his career, hitting .291 with 18 home runs and an .889 OPS.Toronto didnt appear to have any plans of retaliation early in Game 1 on Tuesday as starter Easton Lucas allowed two runs in the first inning.George is one of the more well-respected players in Major League Baseball, Mansolino said Monday.
Really, when any player is in that scenario, anybody whos every kind of stood in the box or stood on the field at any level, I think we all kind of cringe.
Then you see it happen to a guy like George and its even more so.
So, terrifying.
We hope hes OK.
The fact he walked off the field, thats encouraging.Have a news tip? Contact Matt Weyrich at [email protected], 410-332-6200 and x.com/ByMattWeyrich and instagram.com/bymattweyrich..
