Erik Spoelstra slams one aspect of Kel’el Ware’s mentality, Miami Heat could possibly regret not trading him

If Erik Spoelstra is this frustrated with Kelel Ware, the Miami Heat may have made a mistake not trading him for Kevin Durant.
Kelel Ware is one of the brightest young prospects in the NBA.
The #15 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft has established himself as a rising center for the Miami Heat .
The Heat front office sees a lot of value in Ware and wants him to develop well.
But so does the rest of the NBA.
This is why the Phoenix Suns demanded Ware in exchange for Kevin Durant .
Ware himself wants to be his best self for the Heat .
Both the player and the team hold themselves to a very high standard.
But perhaps no one is tougher on Ware than Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra .
During the Heats playoff exit, Spoelstra tried teaching Ware a lesson he would remember for the rest of his NBA career.
And now, despite all of the Heats coaching staff speaking highly about Ware , Spoelstra has given the young Heat star no quarter, calling out a key aspect of his mentality.
Erik Spoelstra says Kelel Ware must improve professionalism and consistency Erik Spoelstra spoke to the media recently during the Miami Heats stint in Las Vegas.
While Spoelstra isnt coaching the Heat Summer League team, he did give some constructive criticism about Kelel Ware.
He wants Ware to improve his professionalism and consistency.
While he understands that he is young, Coach Spo says the Miami Heat wont lower their standards for anyone, and he must work on these things.
Theres layers to this with Kelel.
A big part of this is he has to really embrace and improve his professionalism, his consistency, his approach every single day.
He has to get better with that.
Its learning how to become a pro.
I understand it.
He was 20 last year, and hes 21.
We have bigger expectations.
Its not your normal growth and growing pains of a young player learning how to become a pro.
But thats what this summer is about: Learning how to become a pro, learning how to be consistent every single day.
The talent is there.
The professionalism and consistency has to improve, and it is.
Our standards are not going to change, and our expectations and how fast we want that to improve for him are not going to change.
But he has to get better at it, he has to take ownership of it, and the other stuff will come along with that.
Erik Spoelstras attitude suggests he doesnt want Kelel Ware at Miami Heat So far, for all of the impressive attributes Kelel Ware has shown, the one person who has always taken a measured approach to him is Erik Spoelstra.
On the one hand, you could argue that Spoelstra is trying to show Ware some tough love and help him develop into the prototypical Heat superstar.
But to play devils advocate, its hard to remember Spoelstra being this hard on similarly promising Heat prospects like Bam Adebayo , Tyler Herro , or even Jaime Jaquez Jr.
Could Spoelstra be the one holdout within the Heat organization when it comes to Ware? There have been no reports about Spoelstra having any negative feelings towards the young center.
But given how the Heat have one of the most media-savvy approaches in the NBA, this type of news wouldnt leak.
The Heat realized trading Ware for Kevin Durant wouldnt make them better .
But does holding on to a young star that everyone in the organization, except the head coach, achieve that goal? This article first appeared on NBA Analysis Network and was syndicated with permission..
