Former Jets Forward Signs Two-Year Contract with Detroit

Former Winnipeg Jets draft pick and long-time depth forward Mason Appleton has signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.The Red Wings announced the move on Tuesday, which will see the 29-year-old Appleton earn just under $3 million annually, on a contract featuring a cap hit of $2.9 million.

Appleton, a product of Green Bay, Wisconsin, collected 10 goals, 22 points and 22 penalty minutes in 71 games for the Jets this season, while adding another seven assists and 14 penalty minutes in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff games this spring.His numbers were a slight falloff from his career-best 2023-24 season in Winnipeg, to which he set career-highs with 14 goals, 22 assists and 36 points as well as plus/minus (+16), power play goals (2), shots (122), hits (107), blocks (44) and average time on ice (16:03).

Appleton was selected by Winnipeg in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft and has gone on to post 57 goals and 138 points over his 400-game career with Winnipeg and Seattle.Prior to his time with the Jets, Appleton scored the AHL with the Moose to the tune of 37 goals and 99 points in 120 games, while collecting the Rookie of the Year Award in 2017-18 with Manitoba.

Appleton will join former teammates Andrew Copp and Ben Chiarot in Detroit, which is located near Michigan State University, where he played 72 games from 2015-17 earning 17 goals and 53 points for the Spartans..
