The San Francisco Giants showed their confidence in manager Bob Melvin on Tuesday, exercising his contract option for the 2026 season.

San Francisco was 45-40 and in third place in the NL West heading into the second game of a four-game set at Arizona on Tuesday night.

Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez has experienced a setback in his recovery from a broken right hand and will see a specialist.

Astros general manager Dana Brown said Alvarez felt pain when he arrived Tuesday at the team's spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he had a workout a day earlier.

Alvarez also took batting practice Saturday at Daikin Park.

He will be shut down until he's evaluated by the specialist.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Santander still hasn't been able to resume swinging a bat as he recovers from a partially dislocated left shoulder.

General manager Ross Atkins said Monday that Santander had a left shoulder subluxation after crashing into the outfield wall in Anaheim in early May.

Toronto put Santander on the injured list on May 30.

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a fractured rib.

The team announced the decision after imaging revealed Pena has a "small fracture in one of the ribs on his left side," with a corresponding roster move to come Tuesday.

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana will serve a three-game suspension, reduced from four, for an altercation with a fan during a game at the Detroit Tigers on June 19.

The suspension went into immediate effect, beginning Sunday with the finale of a three-game home series against the New York Mets.

Santana will also sit against the St.

Louis Cardinals on Monday and Tuesday before being eligible to return in the finale of that series Wednesday.

The struggling Boston Red Sox could be getting some offensive help soon.

Manager Alex Cora said Masataka Yoshida would start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old DH/outfielder has been out the entire season following surgery on his right shoulder in October.

"He'll go on a rehab assignment.

We'll see how many at-bats he needs," Cora said Saturday before the Red Sox faced the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.

Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper faced live pitching at Truist Park as he continues to work his way back after an injury to his right wrist.

Harper went on the 10-day injured list June 6.

He traveled with the team to Atlanta and went through a workout in the morning ahead of the Phillies' game against the Braves on Saturday night.

"He was great," Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said.

"Looked like he got his bat speed and his timing looked fine." Shohei Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his major league career at 101.7 mph and worked two efficient innings in his third mound start for the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing one hit and one walk against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

It was the first start of more than one inning this season for the two-way superstar, who is working as an opener as he eases his way back into pitching.

Dave Parker, a hard-hitting outfielder who was set to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame next month, has died, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced Saturday.

He was 74.

No further details about Parker's death were immediately available.

The Pirates informed the crowd of his death just before the start of their game against the New York Mets and held a moment of silence.

"We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Hall of Famer Dave Parker, a legendary Pirate," a portion of Pirates chairman Bob Nutting's statement read.

New York Mets pitcher Griffin Canning had surgery on Friday to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon and will miss the remainder of the season and possibly part of 2026.

Canning was injured during Thursday night's 4-0 win over Atlanta while coming off the mound to field a grounder.

Signed to a $4.25 million, one-year contract as a free agent in the offseason, the 29-year-old right-hander was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts as he bolstered an injury-depleted rotation..
