Brock Purdy should finally have the most normal training camp of his career in 2025

It's time for training camp previews! After an offseason defined by a mass free agency exodus, dead money, and contract extensions, the San Francisco 49ers are finally gearing up to start real football ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
Our camp previews will begin with the sport's most important position.
For the first time in what feels like forever there was no offseason drama for the 49ers under center.
They lost last season's backups Brandon Allen and Joshua Dobbs in free agency, but they added Mac Jones and selected Kurtis Rourke in the draft.
Here's where everything stands with each 49ers quarterback heading into training camp coming up in late July:Brock PurdyThis feels like a make-or-break year for the 49ers' QB.
He enters camp with no more contract questions after agreeing to a five-year, $265 million extension in May.
With no real threat to his standing as San Francisco's franchise signal caller, it's now up to Purdy to take the reins and become the bona fide leader of a Super Bowl-caliber team.
Camp will give Purdy his first real opportunity to have a normal preseason.
In 2022 he was a rookie.
In 2023 he was coming off major elbow surgery.
In 2024 he was dealing with the absences of All-Pros Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams while they ironed out their contract drama.
This year there are no contracts up in the air, and while Aiyuk is working his way back from a major knee injury, Purdy's full complement of weapons should be intact for the start of camp.
Everything is set up for Purdy to thrive.
If he struggles in camp, it would be a bad omen for what lies ahead.
Mac JonesJones is probably the backup.
He signed a two-year contract with San Francisco worth up to $8,410,000, but he's likely looking to get on the Sam Darnold track where he regains some value as a starter by spending a year under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The Shanahan-Jones connection dates back to the 2021 pre-draft process when Jones was heavily connected to the 49ers after their trade up to the No.
3 overall pick.
Jones isn't liable to play so well that it forces San Francisco to question their starting QB.
However, it'll be interesting to see how Jones plays in the preseason and whether there's a marked uptick in play after he struggled the last two seasons as a backup in Jacksonville.
Tanner MordecaiIt'd be hard to blame anyone for forgetting about Mordecai in the 49ers' QB hierarchy.
The 2024 undrafted free agent put together a nice preseason as a rookie and provides just enough upside to be interesting going into Year 2.
Chances are he's not going to push for the QB2 job, but if Jones struggles and Mordecai picks up where he left off last preseason it could make for some training camp drama on the depth chart behind Purdy.
Kurtis RourkeWe probably won't see Rourke much in camp.
He's recovering from knee surgery after playing his last college season on a torn ACL.
He's a player who projects as a potential long-term backup after the 49ers selected him in the seventh round this year.
Rourke may wind up spending the year on IR and getting his knee healthy while he soaks up what he can in meeting rooms.
Next year could be his chance to really make an impact on the roster.
