Rafael Devers Would Still Be A Red Sox if Triston Casas Never Got Hurt, MLB Insider Says originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox shipped off Rafael Devers in a massive move for the player and the franchise.
A lot led up to that trade, and according to an MLB insider, things could've been very different if one thing hadn't happened.Bob Nightengale of USA Today revealed that the drama that led up to the Devers deal might not have happened.
Nightengale made a point of one moment, the Triston Casas injury, that created a tailspin in the relationship between Devers and the Red Sox."If Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas never got hurt," Nightengale writes.
"Rafael Devers would still be in Boston, and everyone would have been spared the drama."The drama surrounding Devers getting moved stemmed mainly from Devers' refusal to play first base.
While some rumors got out of hand, like Devers getting frustrated with rookie Kristian Campbell for trying out first base, the spark is true.
Devers refused to learn first base or play the position during the 2025 season for the Red Sox.
He was initially set to play third base once again, but was usurped by free agent addition Alex Bregman.
While that created the initial rift, it opened wide once Casas went down with a season-ending injury.San Francisco Giants infielder Rafael Devers (16) during the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Oracle Park.Bob Kupbens-Imagn ImagesThe Red Sox needed a first baseman, and Devers refused despite the team being in dire need of one.
This sparked the constant back-and-forth, which ultimately led the Red Sox to trade him to the San Francisco Giants. While the Red Sox still might've moved Devers at some point, there is no denying the Casas injury was the first sign things weren't normal.
Boston, now without their first baseman or designated hitter, is lacking in offensive firepower. The snowball effect from Casas getting hurt has led to Devers getting traded, and plenty more to come.
Whatever happens from here on out is, in a way, directly tied to Casas' suffering a season-ending injury. While there's no way to know for sure if Casas's injury led to Devers getting traded, it is the undeniable starting point where things shifted in a negative direction.
It's a brutal point, and further makes the Casas injury sting months after the fact, and for years to come as well.Related: Red Sox Third Baseman Alex Bregman Named Top Trade CandidateRelated: Red Sox Linked to Brewers' 185 Home Run Slugger and Rafael Devers ReplacementThis story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 23, 2025, where it first appeared..
