Sides’ last ride: Auburn fan set to attend 500th Auburn football game, his passion present amid dementia

Two rows in the southwest end of Jordan-Hare Stadium have been occupied by the same folks for a long, long time.

A dozen seats in a chunk of Section 13, on the end of Rows 31 and 32, have belonged to Teresa Sides and her family for so long she couldnt even tell you when it began.

Teresa, her children and grandchildren have been coming to Auburn football games for decades now.

But the biggest constant in those seats has been Teresas husband, Curtis Sides.

Curtis began going to Auburn games around the age of 12.

He'd accompany a family friend, while adorned in his Sunday best, Teresa said, for contests coached by the likes of Ralph Shug Jordan.

While playing high school football at Lanett, Curtis met Teresa, who was a cheerleader at Valley High School, and as their love grew, so did the tally of Auburn games they attended.

About a half-century later, which has included 49 years of marriage, Curtis and Teresa are still going.

Its been so long that this weekend will mark a milestone for Curtis, who's set to attend his 500th Auburn game when the Tigers play the fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in Athens.

And its a fitting end, as this will likely be Curtis final season coming to games.

In August 2019, Curtis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

Affecting the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain, its a form of dementia that, while still affecting Curtis memory, has also affected several cognitive behaviors; things are simple as communication, logic and reasoning.

Subsequently, it has made getting to games more difficult.

The Sides no longer fly when Auburns on the road.

What used to be frequent road trips on well-known routes throughout the SEC have become fewer and farther between.

But it hasnt stopped Teresa from getting her husband to games, or to such a milestone this weekend.

She wont let it.

If he'd had a heart attack and he couldn't get to the game, he would know and he would want me to get him there, Teresa said.

And I would.

It's a different disease, and it affects the brain instead of the heart, and I know he would still want me to get him there.

...

And I don't want to give up.

I don't want to give up.

Curtis Sides poses for a photo from his seat in Jordan-Hare Stadium before a college football game between Auburn and Arkansas in Auburn on Saturday, Sep.

21, 2024.

For a stretch of time during the Sides ongoing tenure as Auburn season-ticket-holders, theyd get an end-of-season questionnaire asking for feedback on the game day experience.

What was good about this season? What would you like to see us improve upon? Teresa recalled.

You know, 'Do you want premium seats? Or do you want more food at the concession stand? Curtis would always fill it out.

And he always had the same answer: I just want to win.

Thats the kind of fan Curtis has always been; quintessentially die-hard and unrelenting in his expectations, in a way one would expect the most devout in the SEC to be.

Prior to his diagnosis, home games were routine for him and Teresa.

Theyd start tailgating with Kenny and Kathy Knox, friends of Curtis going back to high school, in the early morning, eating and drinking as most any fan does for a pregame festivity.

And the games didnt start at kickoff for Curtis.

They started when the gates opened, getting in to watch the Tigers go through warm-ups.

He's one of those fans that, you know, (its like) Auburn never does anything right, Kenny said with a laugh.

He loves Auburn 125%, but yet he stays on them, like I do most of the time.

Curtis fandom existed heavily outside of game days, too.

Back when practices were open to the public, he always made a point to attend.

A common gift for birthdays or holidays was anything that had to do with Pat Dye, Curtis favorite Auburn football coach.

And, after Curtis and Teresas second and third children were born in 1983, his going to Auburn football games became as constant as getting up in the morning.

Hes been to nearly every SEC school, as far west as Austin and as far east as Columbia, S.C.

The same goes for every Auburn bowl game, as well as nonconference road trips, whether that was to Manhattan, Kan., in 2014, or to Berkeley, Calif., last fall for the Tigers game against the Golden Bears.

He's the one you'd expect to do that, Kenny said.

You've got to sacrifice a lot to do it, with family and stuff like that.

But everybody expected him to go to the games.

It's not, 'Are you going?' It was always, 'When you leaving?' Teresa admitted that, most days of late, Curtis isnt recognizable.

There are better days or moments, where the fun-loving and ever-honest personality of a proud father shines through.

But as his dementia progresses, those days are never certain.

Whats still a constant, though, is a love for his Tigers.

Hes almost always clad in Auburn gear, whether he's leaving the house in an orange and navy windbreaker or a plaid shirt with an AU logo over his left chest pocket.

And hes still on a mission on game days, even if he cant tailgate like the days of old and needs accommodations.

That was apparent earlier this season, when Teresa and Curtis were waiting for transit to take them to the gates ahead of Auburns game against Cal.

He got frustrated, ready to go in the stadium, and the golf cart wasn't there yet.

So he left, you know? He was like, 'I'm going, Teresa said.

And he went straight to the stadium.

He knew his way.

While its always been a certainty that Curtis could be found in the stands of an Auburn football game on Saturdays, another place thats become nearly as constant in recent months is the Epworth Center at Auburn United Methodist Church.

Thats where the REACH Community Respite program is housed, which serves the purpose of supporting and caring for those dealing with early to moderate memory issues on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Curtis first attended REACH late this summer, after multiple months of Teresas encouragement.

It wasnt something he initially wanted to do, Teresa said, so she was floored once he finally said hed go.

When he came out that day, he acted so proud and so happy, Teresa said.

It was like he had come alive.

He had a purpose.

Curtis is one of a few dozen participants, who attend alongside a dozen or so volunteers and a handful of nursing students from Auburn University.

From the outside looking in, it looks like chaos and just people randomly talking at random tables, but it's actually all very meticulously planned out, Sarah Jones, REACHs program director, said.

People are paired up intentionally, with different friends from different generations, and all of the activities actually are designed to be stimulating cognitively, spiritually, emotionally, socially.

So, everything is done on purpose.

Contact program director Sarah Jones at [email protected] or (334) 826- 8800, ext.

252, for more information.

A day at REACH could consist of seemingly anything.

Activities like watercolor painting and balloon volleyball are common, as is live music, and its all designed with stimulation in mind for those in cognitive decline.

Its also a place where, for the first time in a long time, Curtis can feel like Curtis.

Curtis was somewhat of a socialite before his diagnosis.

He used to attend a morning coffee club daily, and another monthly meet-up with old high school football teammates at Cracker Barrel in Opelika.

As his condition has worsened, those arent sit-downs Curtis has been capable of attending.

But at REACH? There's always a gaggle of people around him cheering him on, and in other parts of his life not that he doesn't have a loving and supportive family, but he doesn't get to interact with his community the same way anymore, Jones said.

So, having a place where he's known, where he knows other people and feels like he belongs, I think it has really made an impact on him, and Teresa as well.

I feel like whoever he's talking to, whoever he's interacting with, they can't help but smile and giggle.

He just is so funny and helps everyone feel at ease.

I love to hear him shout War Eagle, too.

If we don't have anything else to talk about, that's what we can talk about.

Curtis Sides flashes a smile at a group table during a REACH meeting at Auburn United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Oct.

1, 2024.

The Knox and Sides family tailgate has been all over Auburns campus.

Prior to Neville Arenas construction, it sat in that parking lot for years.

Since then, its moved to the green space outside the Nichols Center and to the parking deck outside the Ralph Brown Draughon Library.

Just this year, it was moved to Thatch Hall.

Curtis and Teresa were stalwarts at the tailgate, and the way Teresa described it, the scene serves as a timestamp for how their family has grown, with at least a semblance of Curtis and Teresas three children and seven grandchildren regularly in attendance.

It's just such a great environment that it's like a family reunion at every tailgate, she said.

Another timestamp of those tailgates shows how many miles Curtis and Teresa have logged on their Auburn football travels.

Theyve found a sense of community not only with the Knoxs, but beyond them, making friends in places like Baton Rouge and State College, Penn.; friends who have made a point to come to their tailgate for game days on the Plains.

And Curtis always took the tailgate as seriously as he did the games.

Hed run point on food, Teresa recalled, preplanning with others on what dishes theyd bring and often taking charge of whatever the main course was that day.

Itd always be gumbo for the LSU game.

He even went as far as frying turkeys one year around Thanksgiving and, of course, hed help some with the beverages on hand.

He always brought his bottle of Crown, Kenny said, with another chuckle.

He definitely brought his bottle of Crown.

Like much of Curtis daily life, Kenny recalled his friend's magnetic personality manifesting at those tailgates, whether it was in helping set up or being a focal point for fun.

But the tailgating is one of the biggest, and most telling, shifts of Curtis condition when looking at him going to games this season.

He and Teresa were still attending tailgates up until the end of last year, but theyve only done so twice this year.

They also began this season trying to walk to the stadium, but with Curtis' mobility issues, its a difficult trek.

For Week 2, Teresa had accommodations in place for a golf cart.

By the end of Auburns season-opening five-game home stand, the couple was parking at VCOM and riding Tiger Transit to the stadium.

Curtis still arrives when gates open, but hes not the in-game fan he used to be.

Where he used to stay until the score went final, yelling and cheering his way through all four quarters, he and Teresa have stayed for about a half during this seasons games.

He gets real tired real quick, Teresa said.

By halftime, you can tell he's just he starts kind of (getting) heavy-eyed.

This season is one thats been unlike any other for the Sides family.

They're still bringing Curtis to games, but he's in a place that may soon fade from his memory.

But the reality is, whenever Curtis stops going to games or the memories of his four decades worth of Saturdays at them become ones he forgets, the legacy hes left as a steady presence in the Jordan-Hare stands is something his loved ones wont just know, but feel, for years to come.

When he's not tailgating anymore, tailgating and going to Auburn games, it just won't be the same, I can tell you, Kenny said.

It won't be the same.
