Michigan football recruiting: Handicapping chances for top uncommitted targets

At the moment, there's an indeterminate number of commitments that Michigan football is waiting on, with a mixture of head coach Sherrone Moore's eyeball emoji tweets (indicating a pledge) and On3's Hayes Fawcett teasing that there are so many Wolverines targets who are in.Official visit weekend month wrapped up last weekend, and thus, now many top-tier prospects are starting to finalize their decisions as to where they intend to play college football.
And the maize and blue are simply sitting back and waiting to hear their name called or move on to another target. With that in mind, we're going through the vast majority of Michigan's top targets and handicapping the Wolverines' chances to land them -- based on some inside intel, reading the tea leaves, expert predictions elsewhere, need, want, and more.
Here's where we landed on the bulk of the uncommitted targets.Mineral (Va.) Louisa County five-star RB Savion HiterEasily Michigan's top overall target, it feels like the Wolverines will not let Hiter go anywhere but Ann Arbor.
Still, Tennessee, Ohio State, and Georgia are in fierce competition, with the Vols seemingly posing the biggest threat.
Hiter has no decision date set, but Michigan has pushed all of the right buttons along the way.Chances: Very highMiami (Fla.) Northwestern five-star WR Calvin RussellThe Wolverines have quietly coveted the 6-foot-5 receiver from South Florida and have quietly pushed throughout the process.
No one was giving the maize and blue a chance with schools like Miami, Oregon, and LSU pushing for Russell's services.
However, he came to Ann Arbor on an official visit, and it appears that the maize and blue have made a significant move.
Rivals put in a prediction for him to end up in a winged helmet, but outside of that, there's no clear intel.
He's set to decide on July 5.Chances: HighWashington (D.C.) Gonzaga five-star EDGE Carter MeadowsMichigan has long been in the thick of this recruitment, with Meadows being a high-academic type, but Ohio State has made a late push with him being one of the Buckeyes' overall top targets.
This feels like it will go the Wolverines' way, but if OSU is desperate, there's no telling for sure.
He doesn't have a decision date set at the moment.Chances: HighOgden (Utah) Fremont four-star ATH Salesi MoaMichigan is in a good position for Moa, but it feels like he's going somewhere he can play on both sides of the ball -- and that's probably not the Wolverines.
Chances: MediumWestlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian four-star S Davon BenjaminBenjamin visited Ann Arbor on an official, but it feels like he'll stay out West.
Oregon has a prediction as of current.Chances: LowFort Worth (Tx.) North Crowley four-star OT John Turntine IIIThis one has gone back and forth, and Texas has been all the rage throughout his recruitment.
The Wolverines put themselves in a great position, and though the Longhorns have received two predictions, Michigan could win out on this one.
He decides on July 4.Chances: HighMarietta (Ga.) Kell four-star LB Brayden RouseOne of Michigan's top overall defensive targets, and perhaps the top target at the position, Rouse did make the official visit to Ann Arbor, and it appears the Wolverines made a move.
The SEC looms large, but this could be one where Michigan makes a strong NIL push to get itself over the top.Chances: MediumRichmond (Va.) Hermitage four-star CB Andre ClarkeMichigan is the clear leader for Clarke, and he's set to decide on June 30.Chances: Very highFruitland (Idaho) four-star OT Kelvin ObotThe Wolverines felt like they were in a really good position, and the official visit went well, but it now seems as if he'll stay out West, barring a major change.Chances: MediumIrmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork four-star EDGE Julian WalkerThought to be a South Carolina lean given that his father is on the strength staff there, Michigan has been in a stronger position for Walker than many have realized.
He officially visited for Victors Weekend, and it wouldn't be a surprise if the Wolverines upset the Gamecocks on this one.
But he's not likely to decide for at least a few months.Chances: HighSuwanee (Ga.) Collins Hill four-star DL Deuce GeraldsGeralds had a midweek official visit, but with Titan Davis and Alister Vallejo committed, it feels like he'll end up elsewhere.Chances: LowChesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith four-star WR Travis JohnsonJohnson has been seen as a lock to Ann Arbor for some time, but North Carolina has given him some things to think about.
Still, the Wolverines are expecting good news on July 4.Chances: Very highHonolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha four-star OT Malakai LeeLee is set to decide today (Friday, June 27) at 7:30 p.m.
EDT.
All signs point to him becoming a Wolverine.Chances: Very highHouston (Tx.) North Shore four-star S Chace CalicutMichigan definitely made a move for Calicut and his family on his official visit, but Texas appears poised to win out.
He decides today.Chances: LowOwings Mills (Md.) McDonogh School four-star LB Nick Abrams IIDespite Abrams telling Rivals that Michigan is probably running fourth behind some SEC schools, this one feels like a battle that the Wolverines can win with a little persistence.
But time is running short with his decision coming on July 16.Chances: HighCarrollton (Ga.) four-star CB Dorian BarneyMost thought he would end up at Penn State, but after Barney officially visited Ann Arbor for Victors Weekend, it appeared as if the Wolverines took a fast and commanding lead.
He's set to decide on July 4.Chances: Very HighFrisco (Tx.) Panther Creek four-star S Donovan WebbMichigan has appeared to have the lead for Webb for some time, but he doesn't have any 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions.
Still, we think he'll become a Wolverine on July 2.Chances: Very highBradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy three-star LB Duyon Forkpa Jr.Mutual interest between the parties seemed higher in the spring, but at the moment, it doesn't appear there's much momentum for him to end up in Ann Arbor.Chances: Medium lowAtlanta (Ga.) Woodward Academy three-star S Blake StewartStewart officially visted for Victors Weekend and though the Wolverines impressed, it's hard to not see him end up at Clemson.Chances: Medium lowCypress (Tx.) Cy Ranch three-star LB Calvin ThomasThere seemed to be strong mutual interest between Michigan and Thomas but lately, it appears to have waned, at least a little.
It wouldn't be surprising to see him stay down South.Chances: Medium lowMeridian (Idaho) Rocky Mountain three-star IOL Jax TannerTanner visited the first weekend of official visits, but the momentum between parties seemed strongest in the spring.
If Michigan lands John Turntine III, then it would likely preclude him from the class.
Chances: Medium lowTorrance (Calif.) Bishop Montgomery three-star LB Kenneth GoodwinThe Wolverines are in a strong position for Goodwin, but there are some questions by experts whether or not he's a take.
With his decision coming on July 1, it does feel like he will be in the class.Chances: HighThis article originally appeared on Wolverines Wire: Michigan football: Handicapping chances for top uncommitted targets.
