Kirk Herbstreit Reveals Frightening Fallout Will Howard Faced After OSU Loss to Oregon originally appeared on Athlon Sports.College football creates an impassioned context for players and fans alike, but the competitive nature of game has the unfortunate capacity to bring out the absolute worst in people.
That is something former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard, a sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in April, learned last season after the Buckeyes lost a nail-biter to the eventual Big Ten champion Oregon Ducks.
ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit recently detailed Howard's experience, which included death threats after that defeat in Eugene on October 12, 2024.
"Will Howard, he took a knee against Oregon, Herbstreit said on the June 1 edition of "The Learning Leader Show" with Ryan Hawk.
"He played his [expletive] off at Oregon.
He took a knee because he lost the time, and he took death threats.
Its so insane that these people have a voice to get to you.
And you have just got to somehow insulate yourself the best you can, because it is brutal."Howard spoke about the difficulty of that loss and the toll it took on him both mentally and emotionally in the aftermath, though he never mentioned death threats specifically.
Ohio State also lost its final game of the regular season, a rivalry matchup against the University of Michigan, after which head coach Ryan Day employed armed private security to guard his home due to fan backlash.
Howard and Day went on to earn a spot in the first-ever 12-team field in the College Football Playoff, winning four games and exacting revenge via a blowout victory over Oregon on the way to a national championship.
