PETOSKEY Its easy to get caught up in Sadie Coreys achievements as a Petoskey High School athlete.

The senior thatll graduate this Sunday, June 1 as part of the 2025 class will do so with more varsity letters to her credit than anyone to walk through the halls of PHS, with 16 in total.

But, more important to Corey than her own achievements are the friendships she made on each and every team.

All 16 of them.

When she recently qualified for the state championships in track and field, Corey was motivated to just be with her teammates more than for herself.

I kind of wanted to just get to states to go braid everyones hair for it, Corey said with a laugh.

Thats the kind of teammate Coreys been, though.

Team dinners in the winter turned into bonding sessions with Corey who will go into cosmetology at Epiphany Advanced Academy in Traverse City ahead of course doing teammates hair.

Its also probably why shes been part of winners every step of the way.

She earned a BNC title on the soccer field a year ago and the Northmen are favorites to take the district this season.

She also helped volleyball earn a district title and track claim back to back regional titles.

All in all, she's competed in 292 athletic events, between games and meets, looking to add more in soccer and at least one more in track.

Its insane because its been my goal ever since seventh or eighth grade, she said.

But, the 16 letters almost didnt happen, with Corey thinking she wanted to focus solely on soccer in the spring, rather than double up with track.

At first I wasnt going to do track, so if it wasnt for Coach (Karen) Starkey I wouldnt have 16 varsity letters, Corey said.

I was going to quit track.

Then my parents also said it would be the fourth letter I could get and I was like, OK, sure.Soccer has always been No.

1 for Corey, who earned third team all-state honors in the sport a year ago and will complete her fourth straight season of starting in goal this spring.

The atmosphere and the coaching has been amazing, she said of playing soccer at Petoskey.

Shes been a talented outside hitter on the volleyball court with a big right arm, racking up 331 kills, 208 digs and 39 blocks over the last three years combined.

Track has always been extra, competing in both shot put and discus, but shes excited to throw the shot at the Division 2 state finals after a third place finish and personal best at regionals in a throw of 37-feet, 3-inches.

I really wanted it this year because its my senior year and last go out, Corey said.

Im really excited. From a family of athletes, with sisters Macayla and Audrey multi-sport athletes before her, she also gets some of that athleticism from her parents, Tara and Cheyne Corey.

My dad played hockey and then my mom played volleyball and I think basketball, Corey added.

During Petoskeys annual decision day where students announce their decision on their future Corey was recognized with the Grand Slam Award for her four varsity sports completed in a single year, while also earning the Kelly Smith Award, a recognization of leadership, character, scholarship, community and athletic achievements.

Her 16 varsity letters come as one more than 2018 graduate Isabel Anderson, who went on to compete in both track and soccer at Northwood University.

In 2022, PHS graduate Cooper Rokop set the boys letter record with 14, breaking a 70-year record of 13 held by Harry Compton.

To rack up the most letters as a PHS student-athlete is an achievement that hasnt quite sunk in yet for Corey.

At the moment its wild, she said smiling from ear to ear.

Its still very crazy to think about.Contact or send game stats/info to Sports Editor Drew Kochanny at [email protected].
