Can the Boston Celtics stay contenders while trimming salary?
The Boston Celtics are shaping up to have an offseason of heavy work for President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens.
Even before the Achilles tendon injury sustained by star Boston forward Jayson Tatum went down in Game 4 of the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals second round series the Celtics lost in six games to the New York Knicks, the team was already staring down a historic payroll and tax bill. Now, Stevens has to thread the needle of trimming salary while also keeping Boston competitive enough for the 2026-27 season (when Tatum is expected to be back on the court and playing at a high level again by most estimates), no easy task given the lack of cap space and limited means available to Boston to do it with. The folks behind the "WEEI Boston's Sports Original" YouTube channel put together a clip from their "Christian Arcand" show to talk it over recently.
Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about what Stevens is looking at in terms of team building challenges. This article originally appeared on Celtics Wire: Can the Celtics stay contenders while trimming salary?.
